Quba , and Guba ( Lezgian Къуба / Cuba , Judeo - Tat Гъуьбэ / קאובּא / Qybə ), is a city in Azerbaijan . It is the capital of the district of the same name . The city is located at an altitude of about 600 m on the banks of the Kudyal River . In 2014 the population of the city was 24,000.

history

Quba originated from the village of Kudyal, which became the capital of the Quba Khanate in the early 18th century . This was one of the most powerful khanates in northern Azerbaijan. The khanate was annexed by Russia in 1806 .

1918 Quba venue was a massacre of Armenian fighters of the Dashnaktsutiun , who acted as representatives of the newly established Soviet power, at the Azerbaijani population. About 4,000 people were killed.

Culture

Tengialty Fortress from the 16th century is located in the city. Quba also has a large, octagonal Friday Mosque, the Sakine Khanum Mosque and the Ardabil Mosque. There is also an old bathroom topped by two domes. The thinker Abbasgulu Bakhihanov used to live in the city's historical museum. There is also an old cemetery, a cinema and a park in the city.

The city has a university.

Carpets are produced in Quba. From Quba, on the M1 trunk road , there is a bus connection to Baku .
