The M1 is a trunk road in Azerbaijan . The road runs in a north-south direction between the capital Baku and the state border with Russia at Samur (on the river of the same name ). The first 68 kilometers between Baku and Giləzi are developed as a motorway. The M1 is part of the European route 119 .

history

The M1 was originally part of the Soviet M29, which ran along the northern Caucasus to Baku. After the collapse of the Soviet Union , Azerbaijan renamed its M-roads. The part between Baku and Sumqayıt was already developed like a motorway during the time of the Soviet Union and has been modernized and expanded. Since the expansion between 2006 and 2008, the M1 has been the longest motorway in Azerbaijan.
