The Samur ( Russian Самур ; Azerbaijani Samurçay ) is a river in the Caucasus region with a length of 213 km.

It rises in western Dagestan and forms the border between this Russian republic and Azerbaijan in its lower reaches , before flowing into the Caspian Sea . As water is taken from the samur for irrigation purposes , the river level has dropped sharply.

The region around the Samur is inhabited by the Caucasus people of Lesgians in both states and therefore bears the name Lesgistan .
