Jahalom ( Hebrew יהל״ם, German diamond , unit 5528 ) is a special unit of the Israeli armed forces . The name is an acronym from Hebrew יחידת הנדסה למשימות מיוחדות, ( German engineering unit for special tasks ).
The unit consists of several sub-units. There are the pioneers who are experts in defusing all kinds of explosives . There is a reconnaissance sub- unit called Jael ( Hebrew יעל, German Capricorn ), which carries out structural destruction. Arrests of terrorists in the West Bank are also part of their duties. Another Yahalom sub-unit is supposed to locate and destroy underground tunnels or hidden weapon stores. In the years 2015–2017, Sayfan (gladiolus), a new sub-unit was founded to counter the growing threat from unconventional weapons, especially from Syria . This toxic gas sub-unit is on constant alert throughout Israel and can respond to any incident within 30 minutes. Finally there is the samur unit (“weasel”), which is responsible for the fight in the Gaza tunnels . There, Hamas has to be fought in a confined space with low lighting and a lack of oxygen . Robots and other technological systems are used to destroy tunnel entrances. The exact details of these operations are secret.
Units are armed with handguns and purpose-built light weapons such as micro-tavor assault rifles with heavy projectiles to reduce the risk of ricochet ricochets on concrete walls. Explosion noises and gun exhaust would be amplified in such an environment. Yahalom-members are also in Krav Maga for combat trained.
