The M3 is one of the most important highways in Azerbaijan . The road connects Alat with Astara on the border with Iran .
history
The M3 was numbered as M29 during the Soviet Union . Between 1991 and 2008 the M3 ran as far as Baku , with the restructuring of the road network in 2008 it was shortened and has only started from Alat ever since. The northern part was assigned to the M2 .
The M3 was originally built with one lane, although some parts were already equipped with 2 × 2 lanes during the Soviet era. Especially after 2000, the M3 was modernized and expanded as a motorway , which largely runs along the former route. Between 2009 and 2011 a new bypass was built around Alat .
