Salyan is a city in Azerbaijan . It is the capital of the Salyan District . In 2014 about 37,200 inhabitants lived in the city.

Salyan is located on the Kura River , mostly on the right bank and almost 40 km above its mouth in the Caspian Sea .

history

The city was the capital of the Salyan Khanate from 1729 to 1789 , which later became part of the Quba Khanate . From 1806 it belonged to the Russian Empire . In Salyan there was a prisoner of war camp 442 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War .

Economy and Transport

The city is located on the Azerbaijani trunk road M3 and is connected to the country's rail network.
