Astara is a city in Azerbaijan on the border with Iran .
geography
The city has about 17,100 inhabitants (2014). It is the capital of the Azerbaijani Rayon of Astara .
history
Since the peace of Gulistan in 1813, the city of Astara has been divided by the Astachai River , which became a border river and consists of the Azerbaijani city of Astara and an Iranian city of Astara (Iran) .

railroad
The city has a railway connection to the capital with the Baku – Astara railway line. A cross-border rail link to Iran is under construction, but the connecting line from Iran has not yet reached the border.
Culture
Astara has a regional historical museum (Astara Rayon Tarix-Diyarşünaslıq Muzeyi) on Cəfər-Cabbarlı Street.
