Zoltán Varga (born July 12, 1970 ) is a Hungarian chess player .

Life

Varga became International Master in 1989 and Grand Master in 1995 . He won the Hungarian championship in 1996.

Varga won or occupied top places in many tournaments: shared 1st place in Werfen (1991), 1st place in Altensteig (1993), 1st place in Budapest (1994, 1998, 2000), 1st place in Sárospatak (1995) , shared 1st place in Zalakaros (1995), 2nd place in Recklinghausen (1995), shared 1st place in Balatonberény (1997), 2nd place in Gyula (1998), 2nd place in Kőszeg (1999), 2nd place Place in Paks (2000), 1st place in the Sparkassen Open of the Dortmund Chess Days (2001), II.-III. Place in Opatija (2002), I.-VIII. Place in Benasque (2003), II.-IV. Place in Nagykanizsa (2003), I. Place in Miskolc (2004), I. Place in Balatonlelle (2005), I. Place in Zurich (2005), I.-II. Place in Harkány (2006) and I.-III. Place in Balatonföldvár (2007).

Varga took part with Hungary in the 1998 and 2004 Chess Olympiads , the 2001 World Team Championships and the 1992 European Team Championships (in the third team) and 2003 (in which he achieved the second best result on the third board). He also took part in the Mitropacup nine times with the Hungarian team , which he won in 1993, 1995 and 1999.

In Hungary, Varga played for Honvéd Budapest until 2000 , with whom he took part in the European Club Cup four times and came second in 1995, and from 2000 to 2004 for the Miskolci SSC , with which he became Hungarian team champion in 2001 and took part in the European Club Cup 2000 , in the 2004/05 season for Mozgáskorlátozottak PIREMON Sportegyesülete , from 2005 to 2007 and in the 2008/09 season for Tabáni Spartacus Sportegyesület , in the 2012/13 season for Budapesti Egyetemi Atlétikai Club and in the 2013/14 season for Zalaegerszegi Csuti Antal . In the 2016/17 season he played for Lila Futó-Hóbagoly SE , and again for Zalaegerszegi Csuti Antal in the 2018/19 season . In the Austrian Bundesliga he played for ASVÖ SK Lackenbach from 2009 to 2011 , in the Bosnian Premijer Liga in 2002 and 2003 for HŠK Napredak Sarajevo , with whom he also took part in the European Club Cup 2002. In the Czech Extra League, Varga played for ŠK Sokol Plzeň in the 2004/05 season , in the Slovak Extra League in the 1995/96 season for the ŠK Slovan Gemer Rimavská Sobota , from 2005 to 2007 for the ŠK Bašta Nové Zámky and since 2009 for the ŠK Dunajská Streda , with whom he in 2014 , 2017 and 2018 Slovakian team champion, and 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 took part in the European Club Cup. In the Belgian Interclubs he played for the Koninklijke Brugse Schaakkring in the 2017/18 season . In Germany he plays for MTV Tostedt .
