Gyula [ ˈɟulɒ ] (German: Deutsch-Jula , Romanian: Giula ) is a Hungarian city with 31,928 inhabitants (as of 2011) in the district of the same name in Békés County . The city is of great importance for the Romanian minority in Hungary, as a Romanian lyceum and the seat of the Romanian Orthodox diocese responsible for Hungary are located here .
Geographical location
Gyula is located about ten kilometers east of the city of Békéscsaba directly on the border with Romania, 220 km southeast of Budapest. The Élővíz-csatorna flows through the city . To the east of the village is the Fehér-Körös river .
history
The origins of the city go back to the year 1313, when a monastery Gyulamonostor (Latin Julamonustra ) was mentioned. The name probably goes back to a prince of the same name who founded a monastery and settlement.
Gyula Spa
Gyula is a bathing and health resort. The castle bath, one of the most beautiful spas in Hungary, was built in the 8.5 hectare park of the former Almásy castle, which is now a nature reserve. The medicinal water is rich in alkali hydrogen carbonate and chlorides. Due to the high mineral content, the water is brown.
