László Krasznahorkai [ ˈlaːsloː ˈkrɒsnɒhorkɒi ] (born January 5, 1954 in Gyula , Hungary ) is a Hungarian writer .

Life

He first studied law in Szeged , then from 1976 to 1983 Hungarian and literature at the University of Budapest . After 1987 he lived in Berlin for a long time and in the early 1990s in China , Mongolia and Kyoto . During this time he also lived for a while in Allen Ginsberg's apartment in New York , who also advised him on writing.

His novels have been translated into many languages ​​and have been awarded international prizes, including the Tibor Déry Prize , the SWR Best List Prize (1993), the Kossuth Prize (2004), the Spycher: Leuk Literature Prize (2010) and the Brücke Berlin Prize for Literature and Translators (2010).

Krasznahorkai lives as a freelance writer in Pilisszentlászló near Budapest and in Berlin. In the summer semester of 2008 he was a visiting professor at the Free University of Berlin . In 2014 he was awarded the America Award in Literature .

Krasznahorkai received the Man Booker International Prize in 2015 . The chairwoman of the jury, Marina Warner, called him "a visionary writer of extraordinary intensity, whose linguistic expression captures the nature of today's existence in scenes that are worrying, strange, terrifyingly funny and often overwhelmingly beautiful." His translators Ottilie Mulzet and George Szirtes shared at the same time a prize for her translations of Krasznahorkai's works.
