Damnation (Original title: Kárhozat ) is a Hungarian film by the director Béla Tarr from 1988.
action
Karrer leads a bleak life in a dirty, rainy industrial city. In the evening he visits the "Titanik Bar". He had an affair with the singer performing there, but she ended it. She hopes to break through elsewhere.
Karrer is supposed to run a smuggling business for the owner of the bar, Willarsky . He passes this job on to Sebestyén, the singer's husband, because he hopes to win over the singer in his absence. In fact, he sleeps with her and tells her that he can only trust her.
After Sebestyén's return there is an argument. Meanwhile, Willarsky takes the singer into his car and also has sex with her. The next day, Karrer betrays everyone else to the police. In the last scene you can see him in a rubbish bin in the rain, where he is shooing a dog on all fours and barking.
background
With this film, the director Tarr started a new style: the dark film is shot in black and white and contains many long shots without editing, which primarily describe the atmosphere of the place, the people in it and the all-encompassing hopelessness. It is also Tarr's first collaboration with writer László Krasznahorkai , who contributed to the script based on one of his stories.
Damnation was one of Susan Sontag's favorite films .
