history
The oldest bronze finds in the Mühlviertel were found in Schenkenfelden, Gallneukirchen and Engerwitzdorf . In Schenkenfelden it is a medium-sized rag ax from the younger Bronze Age and a Neolithic flat ax made of serpentine , found near the Bannwald (Panholz). They suggest that there was settlement activity in the area of Schenkenfelden very early (1500–1000 BC).
In 1270 the place was first mentioned as Schenchenvelde , whereby the place name is derived from the basic word field and the family name Schenk and thus the profession of innkeeper or cupbearer . There is a popular interpretation of the location of the place on the Linzer Steig about the origin of the place name :
- “It was hundreds of years ago: a wagon train bumps between Leonfelden and Freistadt through the dark northern forest . It is the carters who bring their goods from the Danube to Bohemia. They finally reach a clearing in the forest. A single house in an open field - a tavern invites you to stop. The carters call this rest stop the tavern in the field . "
Due to the development of the parish in the Mühlviertel, the parish Neumarkt im Mühlkreis was used for pastoral care , and Schenkenfelden was one of its branch parishes with parish or burial rights. This is mentioned for the first time in 1296 in a letter of indulgence from the then Bishop of Passau, and an old baptismal register reports that there should have been two of these before the current church. The Historical Atlas also refers to an already existing church in 1270. The only information about the beginnings of today's church is that the portal was set in 1525, as this year is carved in stone above the main entrance.
According to a document dated November 29, 1356, Schenkenfelden is a free, imperial market, and in 1492 Emperor Friedrich confirmed the Schenkenfelden market the privilege of holding a weekly market every Wednesday. As a result of religious wars and the Thirty Years' War , the population in the Mühlviertel suffered great suffering, and as a result there were peasant revolts in large parts of Upper Austria, including around Schenkenfelden. On May 29, 1626 the siege of Freistadt began by a peasant army. Mainly farmers from the surrounding area took part in the siege. The city was taken, but soon recaptured by the imperial army under Colonel Breuner . On August 31, one of the last major battles north of the Danube took place near Königschlag in a field near the Miesenwald. Today a memorial (Hofbauernmarterl) commemorates this battle, in which around 500 farmers were either killed or taken prisoner.
On March 4, 1877, the Schenkenfelden volunteer fire brigade was founded by Mayor Laurenz Benischek. Franz Steffan became the first in command.

The talking coat of arms is a popular symbolization of the place name (zu Schenke , Landgasthaus). The red-white-red field indicates that the market belonged to the sovereign region of Freistadt at that time (Freistadt is the only municipality that carries the Austrian Bindenschild as such).
