particularities Sternsteinwarte ( AT )

The Sternstein is 1122  m above sea level. A. high mountain north of the city of Bad Leonfelden in Upper Austria , near the border with the Czech Republic . Geologically it belongs to the Bohemian Massif and is the easternmost point of the Bohemian Forest .

Location and landscape

The majority of the Sternstein lies in the community of Vorderweissenbach , including the Sternsteinwarte on the summit of the mountain, which appears in the coats of arms of both communities (symbolically as a star near Vorder Weißenbach, clearly shown near Bad Leonfelden) The European watershed between Danube and Vltava runs over the summit . The Große Rodl and the Dürnaubach arise on the Sternstein .

On the eastern slope, around 100 to 150 meters below the summit, there is a 120 meters wide and deep hollow. It is very likely that this was an Ice Age formation. Further traces of ice such as moraines, ice grinds etc. have not yet been discovered. This would be the easternmost glaciation in the Bohemian Forest, as the snow line in the Ice Age was around 1,100 meters above sea level and the glacier tongues reached down to 900 meters above sea level. Nevertheless, the area around the Sternstein, with an annual mean temperature of less than 6 ° C, is one of the coldest areas in all of Upper Austria.

Tourist development

A combination lift (8-seater gondola and 6-seater chair) from Carvatech as well as a drag lift open up the mountain with its four slopes. In winter 5 km of ski slopes are groomed. There is also a 4000 m² children's area and a 174 m long magic carpet .

The Salzsteigweg , a long-distance hiking trail, begins at the summit and leads from here over the Dead Mountains and the Nock Mountains to Arnoldstein .

Astronomical observatory

Sternsteinwarte in winter

The Sternsteinwarte is a 20 meter high observation tower that was built from granite blocks on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1898 . From its viewing platform you have a very good panoramic view over the Mühlviertel hill country to the Dachstein and the Watzmann .
