Area distribution

history

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place has belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century and to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns since 1490 .

The first documented mentions of Herzogsdorf come from the years 1378 ( Hertzensdorf ), 1457 ( Herzelendorf ) and 1499 ( Herzogstorff ), whereby the place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Herizi . However, there are older documents for the villages of Hilkering (around 1190), Mahring (1210), Neudorf and Neußerling (both 1264), Stötten (1287) and Koth (1354). The two villages of Neudorf and Neußerling, 3 km apart, are of particular interest. The name Neußerling corresponds to the Bohemian name Novosedlo (= "New settlement") and thus has the same meaning as Neudorf. This Slavic-German pair of names thus indicates parallel foundations by German- or Slavic-speaking settlers.

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times and has since returned to Upper Austria.

After Austria was annexed to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, Upper Austria became the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

On November 18, 2013, the community was elevated to a market town.
