from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Place-name books represent a special category of scientific lexicons . In historical place-name books, the names of the respective names are given in historical documents in addition to the names of the (human) settlements in a certain area. Development of place name books

The development of place name books is a time-consuming undertaking that also requires in-depth knowledge of various areas.

On the one hand, the historical evidence of the names must be obtained from historical documents and other documents (such as property registers, contracts, etc.), which requires extensive research in the archives in question. Knowledge of historical fonts (e.g. Kurrent script ), the structure of certain types of documents and the language of the documents (e.g. Latin or Middle High German ) are helpful for evaluating the documents examined .

In order to work out the etymology of place names , extensive linguistic knowledge, especially the history of sounds in the languages in question, is required. The original, unadulterated form of the name (e.g. through folk etymologies or hypercorrections) is determined or reconstructed from the oldest documented names and the dialectal pronunciation . This is where the etymological interpretation of the name begins.

In folk etymologies is reinterpretations of no more understood by the name speakers. Example: The original Roman name of the city of Klagenfurt (capital of Carinthia ), l'aquiliu that of on to future Slavs with the Slavic word cvilja was brought, "Lamentation" in the context, what the complaints wade was taken into German.

In Hyper corrections is false corrections such as Verhochdeutschungen supposedly dialectal forms.
