Place name book of the canton of Bern

The place name book of the canton of Bern is a scientific work founded by Paul Zinsli and developed at the University of Bern , the aim of which is the documentation and interpretation of all place and field names in the German-speaking part of the canton of Bern . The book of place names has been published by Francke Verlag , today Narr Francke Attempto Verlag , since 1976 .

goals and tasks

The aim of the work is the most complete collection of all Mundartlautungen of place names that are arrested still in the field, capturing the documented traditional place names of German canton Bern and the complete publication of the names material in an alphabetically ordered reference book with careful as possible etymological interpretation of Names.

History of origin

Work on the place-name book began as a result of a Federal Council resolution of 1938 which obliged the cantons to set up nomenclature commissions to which the responsibility for determining names could be transferred in writing. This was mainly done with regard to map labels. The chosen spelling should reflect the local pronunciation as far as possible. The commission of the canton of Bern included Heinrich Baumgartner and Paul Zinsli. The Bern Commission began to conduct surveys of the still living dialect forms in the field. This resulted in a large collection of oral evidence, which is still kept today in the form of receipts at the Research Center for onomastics at the University of Bern. In addition, there were collections of historical documents that were excerpted from land registers and other historical sources and were also incorporated into the collection of notes. The total inventory of the slip collection is around one million. From 1976 the publications of individual volumes followed, initially by Paul Zinsli and later edited by him together with Peter Glatthard. The current project manager is Thomas Franz Schneider, who has been the editor since the third volume (partly together with Erich Blatter).
