Gallneukirchen is a municipality in the Lower Mühlviertel in the Urfahr-Umgebung district . With an area of 5.19 square kilometers and 6567 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020), Gallneukirchen is the smallest in terms of area and the second largest in terms of population in the district. The community is located in the judicial district of Urfahr .

The place on a trade route from Linz via Freistadt to Bohemia was first mentioned in 1125. From 1145 Gallneukirchen was subject to the owner of Riedegg Castle . Around 1260 the place received market rights.

The horse-drawn railway Budweis – Linz – Gmunden , which ran through Gallneukirchen from 1832, brought about an economic upswing in the town. In 1873 the predecessor association of today's Protestant Diakoniewerk was founded. The location in the so-called “bacon belt” of Linz has caused a strong population increase since the 1960s. Due to the increasing importance of the market, the city was surveyed in 2001. The city's slogan is “Experience the city, enjoy the country”.

The municipal area covers an area of 5.19 square kilometers. The largest expansion in east-west direction is 3 kilometers and in north-south direction 2.9 kilometers.

The highest point is north of the center near Punzenberg at around 456  m above sea level. Landscape around Gallneukirchen

Gallneukirchen belongs to the granite and gneiss plateau , the Austrian part of the Bohemian mass . From a geological and geomorphological point of view, as well as from the point of view of the use of space, the northern part of the municipality belongs to the Upper Austrian Central Mühlviertler Hochland spatial unit , while the southern part falls into the southern Mühlviertel peripheral areas .

In the north of the municipality, the subsoil consists of Engerwitzdorfer granite and Migmagranite. The portion of the Gallneukirchen basin in the southern part of the municipality consists of tertiary deposits on Mauthausen granite . Most of the deposits formed streaks and the remainder sands. Alluvions can be found along the rivers , where numerous fossils have been found.

The Große Gusen flows through the municipality from north to south towards the Danube . In the municipality, the Mirellenbach flows into the Gusen. Well-known still waters are not available due to the small community area.

City structure

City structure and neighboring communities

The former Markt Gallneukirchen has been a cadastral municipality with the same boundaries since 1784 and a municipality with the district Gallneukirchen since 2001.

The distribution of land use shows that the agricultural and forestry areas make up 75% and gardens 13.5% of the communal area.

Neighboring communities

Gallneukirchen is surrounded by the communities of Alberndorf in der Riedmark , Engerwitzdorf and Unterweitersdorf . The first two belong to the Urfahr-Umgebung district , the latter to the Freistadt district . Their data form the basis for the descriptions of the climate in the two spatial units relevant for Gallneukirchen. The municipality of Gallneukirchen is one of the climatically favored locations in Upper Austria due to its basin location. Due to the southern exposure of the basin, the climate is mild and the annual mean is between eight and nine degrees Celsius, thus showing strong similarities to the climate in the Linz area or in Machland .

The coolest month is January with average temperatures of −1.5 to −2.1 ° C and the warmest July with an average temperature between 17.7 and 18.8 ° C. The precipitation in the Gallneukirchen basin is between 700 and 800 mm per year, making it the driest area of the southern Mühlviertel region . Due to the high temperatures in the Mühlviertel, the total snowpack is low in winter and continuous snowpacks are the exception. Winds come most frequently from the west, the second most common from the southeast.

history

The parish church of Gallneukirchen , view from the southeast

In the Tertiary, today's municipal area was covered by the sea. In the Younger Stone Age, people settled on the slopes of the Gallneukirchen basin, as evidenced by numerous finds of flat and stone axes. A burial mound with 4 graves from the late Bronze Age was uncovered east of the center in Tumbach.

Presumably there was already a parish in Gallneukirchen in the 9th century, which at that time had separated from the mother parish in Linz and is therefore one of the oldest parishes in today's Mühlviertel. The church is dedicated to Saint Gallus , who died around 640 AD and was first mentioned in 1180. The place was first mentioned in 1125 as Novenkirchen . In 1145 the predecessor of today 's Riedegg Castle was built by Gottschalk von Hausperg, who had fiefdom over the place. The feudal sovereignty went to the Diocese of Passau with the acquisition of Riedegg in 1211 and was exercised by them until 1411. The diocese appointed the pastors and market judges of the place. Around 1260 the place received market rights, which were confirmed in 1510 and since 1356 the current place name Gallneukirchen has been used.

The location on an important trade route from Linz via Freistadt to Bohemia was the basis of the prosperity and existence of the market residents.

In 1411 the fiefdom of 5000 pounds Viennese pfennigs went to the brothers Caspar and Gundakar von Starhemberg at Wildberg Castle , whose descendants had Riedegg Castle converted into a castle in 1539.

In the 15th century the parish church was expanded to its present size. In the 16th century, most of the Gallneukirchen people professed the Protestant faith. After the new faith became official under Rüdiger von Starhemberg in 1562, the place remained Protestant until the Counter-Reformation. In the course of the peasant wars in 1622, the market burned down and many houses were damaged.

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times and has since returned to Upper Austria. From 1832 to 1872 the horse-drawn railway transported goods and people through Gallneukirchen. The train station was Oberndorf . A short section of the route can be viewed near the Mirellenbach.

In 1810 a revival movement was initiated by the Catholic priest Martin Boos . Its followers, the Boosians, were expelled from the church as heretics. At the beginning of 1873 the Boosians founded the Association for Inner Mission, from which today's Protestant Diakoniewerk emerged.

In 1905 the Protestant parish church was built. In 1933 an Englishman bought Riedegg Castle from the Starhembergers before the Mariannhiller Missionaries bought it in 1936 .

After Austria was annexed to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, Upper Austria became the Gau Oberdonau . American tanks hit the market in early May 1945. From July 1, 1945, the Red Army occupied Gallneukirchen and the place belonged to the Soviet occupation zone until 1955 . Since the end of the Second World War, the place has experienced a considerable boom, to which in particular the connection to the Mühlkreis Autobahn in the 1970s contributed.

In 1985 the municipality became a European municipality and since 1992 there has been a partnership with Northeim in Lower Saxony .

On March 5, 2001, Gallneukirchen was raised to the status of a city by the Upper Austrian provincial government.

Population development

Around 1545, 87 houses in the Gallneukirchen district were mentioned in the Riedegg land register. In 1846 the number of inhabitants was given as 1467.

In 1869 there were 1509 people living in the municipality. Until 1961 the population rose steadily to 2,741. In the 1960s a considerable increase in population began, which can be attributed to the location in the suburb of Linz . The number of inhabitants in the district comparison above average. In the 2001 census , Gallneukirchen had 5915 inhabitants and in 2006 there were already 6309 inhabitants. As a result of the continuous influx of people, there will be 6,574 main residences in 2020. In terms of population, Gallneukirchen is the third largest of the eight cities in the Mühlviertel after Perg and Freistadt.

In the 2001 census, the proportion of residents aged 60 and over was 14.4%, while 20% were under 15 years old. The proportion of the female population was 51%.
