A. in Dornach near Grein. The highest elevations in the area are the Pfenningberg at 616  m above sea level. A. and part of the Kürnberger Forest at 460  m above sea level. A.

The room unit is surrounded by the following Upper Austria room units (clockwise, starting in the north): Aist-Naarn-Kuppenland , Machland , Linzer Feld , Eferdinger Becken , Inn and Hausruckviertel hill country , Sauwald , Danube gorge and side valleys and Central Mühlviertel highlands .

Characteristic

  • Narrow area (a few kilometers to a few hundred meters) along the southern edge of the Bohemian Massif between Waizenkirchen and Grein with a flat, wavy relief, sometimes like a plateau. Towards the basin locations (Eferdinger Becken, Linzer Feld, Machland) with more or less steep slopes to the Danube, here very warmly favored and more structured.
  • Tertiary deposits over granite , very small-scale distribution of the various geological subsoil, an unusually colorful mix of habitats. The mostly only slightly deepened streams are built close to nature to (small-scale) hard, gallery forests can be found along the Großer and Kleiner Gusen .
  • On the flat, undulating plateau, the landscape is rather poor in structure. Arable farming , little grassland and spruce forests are dominant.
  • On the slopes towards the basin areas, it is much more structured with near-natural forests and cultural landscapes. Lots of ash- rich forests on the slopes and along streams, occasional giant horsetail ash forests. Orchards, small trees, nutrient-rich embankments as well as vineyards and vegetables can be found here and there.
  • Many sand pits with dry vegetation and ponds of particular importance for insects (e.g. for wild bees ). Sometimes kaolin and clay pits are important structural elements of the landscape.
  • Dry meadows with many rare species are still widespread (e.g. the only pasque flower locations north of the Danube). Strange combination of locations, such as granite surrounded by limestone semi-arid grass.
  • Very different settlement, dense settlement on the southern slopes, especially in the Linz area. Above the slopes predominantly rural settlement, small villages with few settlement fragments. Stronger settlement development northeast of Linz.
