Waizenkirchen is a market town in Upper Austria in the Grieskirchen district in the Hausruckviertel with 3715 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The community is located in the judicial district of Grieskirchen .

geography

Waizenkirchen is at an altitude of 367  m above sea level. A. in the Hausruckviertel. The extension is 8.8 km from north to south and 8.6 km from west to east. The total area is 34.2 km², 9.6% of the area is forested, 79.6% of the area is used for agriculture.

The community colors are blue and white.
The golden panther in blue points to Georg Achaz von Losenstein, who, as the owner of the Weidenholz rulership at the time, obtained the market survey and the award of the coat of arms in 1593 by Emperor Rudolf II . The church speaks for the place name.

history

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns . During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times.

Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the connection of Austria to the German Reich on 13 March 1938, the place to "Upper Danube" belonged. In 1945 Upper Austria was restored.

The name Waizenkirchen - actually "Wazenkirchen" appears for the first time around the year 1150 in the Salbuch of the Reichersberg Abbey.

Waizenkirchen was the center of the judicial district Waizenkirchen until 1923 and was added to the judicial district of Peuerbach after its dissolution . At the same time, the community was detached from the Eferding district and part of the Grieskirchen district.

politics

Mayor Wolfgang Degeneve of the ÖVP resigned in the summer of 2018 for health reasons, he was the successor of Josef Dopler. The ÖVP has held an absolute majority since the beginning of the Second Republic and provided all mayors. The mayoral election took place on November 11, 2018; Fabian Grüneis (ÖVP), Gerhard Kaltseis (FPÖ) and Andreas Aumayr (Greens) were candidates. Grüneis was elected mayor.

Population development

In 1991 the community had 3602 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 3660 inhabitants.

economy

The largest employers in the community are the companies Weigl (elevators), Bauernfeind (PVC pipes), Guschlbauer (large bakery), Isolena (sheep's wool insulation materials) and the market town. There are also numerous cattle and grain farmers, as well as a well-developed infrastructure.

  • Schloss Hochscharten : Schloss Hochscharten has been owned by right-wing extremist and industrialist Robert Wimmer since 1989, and it was recently sold to a real estate developer from Peuerbach. To the displeasure of the Waizenkirchen population, the Robert Wimmer Association of Friends of Culture and Contemporary History held regular events for the neo-Nazi scene here. Prominent Holocaust deniers such as David Irving and Gerd Honsik also appeared there.
  • Wilhelm Kienzl Museum: A memorial room has been set up in the house where the composer Wilhelm Kienzl was born, and a memorial plaque has been attached to the house itself (Wilhelm-Kinzl-Straße No. 1)
  • Aschachtal : The Aschachtal Natura 2000 area is located on the route between Waizenkirchen and Aschach. Along the river, the Aschach , there is a spring with low-lime water, which is very popular with the local population. The forest area of ​​the Aschachtal is inhabited by many animal species.
  • Memorial for deceased SS fighters in Stillfüssing: A memorial for 13 SS fighters of the 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" who were killed in the last days of the war. This was a place of pilgrimage for the right-wing extremist comradeship association " Kameradschaft IV " until 2015 and is still maintained by the local comradeship association with the support of the community. After it was damaged in a traffic accident in February 2015, the monument was renovated and partly rebuilt.
