Engelbert Lanz

Engelbert Lanz (born September 23, 1820 in Waizenkirchen , † October 12, 1904 in Linz ) was an Austrian composer , organist and music teacher.

After his school education, Lanz was trained as a teacher in Linz and worked in Buchkirchen from 1838 , then from 1840 at the Kremsmünster Abbey High School as a teacher and at the same time in the monastery administration; he also played as a double bass player in collegiate music. In 1845 Lanz founded the Liedertafel, which soon became known for compositions by Lanz himself. In 1847 he switched to the secondary school in Kremsmünster and at the same time became a music teacher at the Gymnasialkonvikt.

In 1855 Lanz moved back to Linz, where he worked at the teacher training institute. In addition, he headed the Linz Music Association and the song table Frohsinn. In Linz there was also close contact with the composer Anton Bruckner , whom he knew from their school days in Linz; In 1859 Lanz prepared the world premiere of Bruckner's Mass in E minor . The foundation stone laying ceremony of the Linz Immaculate Conception Cathedral on May 1, 1862 Lanz wrote the eight-voice Offertory "misit Dominus" and also conducted the premiere of the written for the same occasion Festkantate of Bruckner.

Lanz died in Linz in 1904 at the age of 84.
