history

Archaeological finds show that the Neumarkt area was inhabited as early as the Neolithic . In Roman times, a place developed at the intersection of two streets , which, due to its convenient location, developed into an important trading center. Neumarkt was first documented in 1220 in a confirmation document from Pope Honorius III. Mentioned as “Novum Forum” (Neuer Markt). In 1543 the landlord, Count Georg von Schaunberg , issued a market regulation, which is regarded as a market survey . Neumarkt experienced a great boom with the opening of the Wels – Passau railway line in 1861 and its development into a transport hub.

coat of arms

Blazon : in gold on a green shield base, St. Florian in iron-colored (blue) knight armor with a red and silver striped armor, in his left hand holding a pole with a fluttering, red-silver divided flag, with his right from a red sixth (bucket ) pouring a silver jet of water against the silver, red-roofed church going out from the left edge of the shield, from whose black gate and window openings red-yellow flames of fire beat.

The market coat of arms was awarded to Neumarkt in 1553 by Count Wolfgang von Schaunberg. It shows with St. Florian the parish patron of Neumarkt and with the red and white flag the (reversed) colors of the Schaunberger.

Economy and Infrastructure

Neumarkt-Kallham train station

traffic

Neumarkt has a branch station, Neumarkt-Kallham , on the Wels – Passau branch of the Austrian Western Railway. It is also an end point of the Linz Local Railway . In 2010 the renovation and barrier-free design of the station was completed (conversion costs: 53 million euros). The train station is an important regional transport hub for commuters and schoolchildren.

Established businesses

former Wurm leather factory (2014)

Until the 1980s, Neumarkt was economically strongly industrialized by several large companies (Duswald Mühle, Lederfabrik Wurm, ...) (part of the place, the so-called Wurmsiedlung, was built especially for the workers of this company). The economic decline of these traditional companies began in the 1990s. In the meantime, many companies have closed and withdrawn, for example the Wurm leather factory was closed due to an environmental scandal. In Neumarkt there was the cheese dairy Wild, the production facility for "Sirius Camembert", a cheese variety known throughout Austria, which is now produced in Styria . The private brewery Ritterbräu, a location of the global company Hexcel Composites, the headquarters of Duswald Bau and the company Grüne Erde are still located in Neumarkt .
