Monika Kruse (born July 23, 1971 ) is a German techno DJ, producer and record label owner . She played an important role in the Munich rave scene in the early 1990s and was one of the first internationally active German techno artists. She runs the “Terminal M” record label she founded in Berlin. She appears regularly at major European events such as Awakenings or Time Warp . In 2000, she founded the No Historical Backspin charity .

Life

Kruse was born in West Berlin in 1971 and grew up in Munich after her parents moved there with her as a baby. She began taking classical piano lessons at the age of four. As a teenager she started collecting records and listened to funk, soul, hip-hop and house.

After graduating from high school, she completed various internships in the music industry before she took a position as a product manager at Chrysalis Records and worked with bands such as Gang Starr and Monie Love .

Kruse's career as a DJ began in 1990 when she started playing in the Babalu Bar in Munich. While doing her first sets of hip-hop and funk, she was soon influenced by the emerging Detroit techno and Chicago house . The first house parties followed with Michael Reinboth and soon the first regular club night in the Parkcafé with DJ Linus and Ulf Poschardt .

In 1993 she became a member of the Ultraworld Crew, which organized techno parties in Munich and opened the ultrasound techno club in 1994 . Kruse was resident DJ there from the beginning . During this time, Kruse also organized illegal techno parties in empty houses, disused thermal power stations and on tank training areas.

In 1995 Kruse started his own music productions. A co-production with Richard Bartz was released on a compilation earlier this year. Kruse worked as A&R at Bartz's label Kurb-Records. In the summer of 1995 she organized a housetram party in a tram for the first time.

In the middle of the decade, Kruse performed regularly with Sven Väth at Club Omen in Frankfurt am Main . She played with Carl Cox at the Global Gathering in Great Britain , at Limelight alongside DJ Pierre in NYC and Chicago and a few later at the Belgian club Fuse.

In 1997, Kruse moved to Berlin and founded her record label Terminal M there in 2000. Music by Stimming and Andhim as well as by guests such as Patrick Lindsey , DJ Rush , Miss Kittin , Gregor Tresher, ANNA, Pig & Dan, Paride Saraceni, appeared there early on . Noir, Victor Ruiz. Terminal M supports Skober, Metodi Hristov, Kydus, Drunken Kong and Ilija Djokovic as up-and-coming talents.

In 2000 she played in front of 1.5 million people on the Berlin Love Parade . In the same year Kruse founded the No Historical Backspin project , which campaigned against racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism and against attacks on migrants. These charity parties were supported by many colleagues, artists like Cassy, Tama Sumo and Gaiser performed there again and again. Their charity party in Berghain in March 2015 brought DJs like andhim, Anja Schneider , & ME and Ellen Allien together and raised over 20,000 euros for the Amadeu Antonio Foundation . The Amadeu Antonio Foundation is one of the leading NGOs in Germany that works to strengthen civil society and against neo-Nazism, right-wing extremism, anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry and hatred. Kruse's welcome party for refugees that same year raised money for people fleeing violence and persecution. Kruse explains: "Nobody should be discriminated, hindered or injured on the basis of their personal background, race, gender, belief, physical handicap or sexual orientation - be it in Germany or elsewhere. We are against all forms of discrimination. 70 Years after the National Socialist tyranny in Germany, we want to strengthen the diversity of society through music, fun and community and set an example for tolerance. That should be a matter of course for a common, peaceful future. "

Kruse appeared for the first time at the Time Warp in Mannheim in 1999 and is still an integral part of the line-up today. She also plays regularly at major European festivals such as the Awakenings in the Netherlands.

In 2001 she began performing in Ibiza when she played with Sven Väth on his cocoon residency at Amnesia . In 2016 she performed at the last Carl Cox party at Space in Ibiza. In 2017 she played several times at the Hyte Wednesday Night Residency in Amnesia.

Kruse also performed at the Burning Man Festival held in Black Rock City, a temporary city being built in Nevada's Black Rock Desert . She performed there for the first time in 2011, she sees the festival as a "spiritual matter":

“I went there for the first time after my mother died. I visited the temple where you can alleviate your sadness. There you get in touch with yourself and write to those you have lost. "

Kruse also performed at the Berghain club in Berlin from the start .

In 2017, Kruse made her debut on the weekly radio show " Essential Mix ", which was broadcast on BBC Radio 1 . The host Pete Tong described it as "Techno Royale".

Career as a producer

In 1997 Kruse released her first solo production on a compilation and moved to Berlin , where she released her first mix CD. During this time she met Patrick Lindsey and worked with him for several years as a producer as Monika Kruse @ Voodooamt. The first publication took place in 1998. In 2000, Kruse founded her first label Terminal M.

2001 Monika Kruse @ Voodooamt released the first album with Patrick Lindsey, “Panorama”.

In 2003 she founded another record label, Electric Avenue Recordings. In the summer she reached number 1 in the Dutch dance charts and the Top 20 in the Spanish sales charts with “Latin Lovers”. The piece was a hit across Europe. “Passengers”, their second LP, was released in autumn 2003.

In 2007 Monika Kruse started a cooperation with Gregor Tresher from Worms. Their first joint production "GTMK - and more ..." was released in July 2007 - followed by another 12 "" GTMK - Panchakarma "on the renowned Dutch label Intacto.

In 2008 Kruse released her acclaimed solo debut album "Changes of Perception", which charted at number 2 on the "Best Albums of 2008" in the Raveline.

Kruse's follow-up album "Traces" was released four years after "Changes of Perception" and is a reflection of her personal experiences and musical influences: "It's a combination of different electronic styles that have all influenced me a lot."

She started working on “Traces” in February 2011 but took a break from producing the album after her mother passed away. She returned to the studio in the fall and finished it in February 2012.

In 2017, “Get Me On” was released, a new EP from Kruse and her long-time colleagues Pig & Dan, with whom she produced four EPs.
