Mono & Nikitaman is a German-speaking band that was founded in 2004 by Monika Jaksch and Nick Tilstra. Her music, with mostly socially critical texts, has musical influences from reggae , dancehall , hip-hop , pop music and punk .
history
Mono (bourgeois Monika Jaksch ; * May 5, 1975 in Linz ) completed her studies at the Linz Art University. She lived for some time in Bristol and San Francisco to shoot her hip-hop documentary Paint the town blue . She was also a member and DJ in the Linz sound system Soundsgood International.
Nikitaman (real name Nick Tilstra ; born July 4, 1974 in Düsseldorf ) who grew up in the squatter milieu in Düsseldorf played as a percussionist in several bands. In addition, he toured with various sound systems , including in the southern Italian Salento . At the meeting there with the Linz sound system Soundsgood International, he met Monika Jaksch.
On the EP Ahh ... Loco ..? from Nikitaman there is a first feature with Mono, whereupon both decided in 2004 to form a band together. This was followed by four albums that have been released on the independent label Rootdown Records . Her first live album was released there in 2012 .
Mono & Nikitaman live in Berlin today .
music
Mono & Nikitaman have become known as a dancehall reggae band, but their music also contains influences from hip-hop, pop and punk. This diverse mix is due to the different socialization of the two.
While Nikitaman grew up in squats as a child and was influenced by punk and street music, Mono dealt intensively with the English and American independent hip-hop scene during her studies, which resulted in her documentary Paint the town blue . Their texts often deal with socially critical issues and they take a stand against exclusion, racism, oppression and homophobia. Mono & Nikitaman have worked together with artists such as Gentleman , Ce'Cile , Rebellion the Recaller and Teka, among others .
Since 2009 Mono & Nikitaman have been the official sponsors of the project “ School without Racism - School with Courage ” at the Hannah Arendt High School in Haßloch .
Her album Im Rauch der Bengalen was released three years after her live album on October 30, 2015 as the first release on her own label M&N Records .
In December 2019 her tour started under the name "Never be like all the others" in Germany and Austria on which the rapper Shogoon accompanied her as support.
