Russkaja is a band from Vienna that was founded in 2005. The band's sound was inspired by traditional Russian music and mixes it with ska , rock and polka beats .

Members

Russkaja was founded by the former Stahlhammer singer Georgij Alexandrowitsch Makazaria . The band has seven members. Many of the former and current members were and are also active in other well-known Austrian formations. Drummer and singer Titus Vadon has already played with Drahdiwaberl and in the cabaret group Das Balaton Combo . Guitarist Zebo Adam, son of the musician Ludwig Adam , was already successful with the Hallucination Company . The saxophonist Manfred Franzmeier is also a member of the funk band Hot Pants Road Club and played in the electronic funk group Madrid de los Austrias . Hans-Georg Gutternigg, the player of the " Potete ", a mixture of trumpet and trombone specially developed for the band, in turn gained experience with the conductor Franz Welser-Möst and the jazz musician Joe Zawinul . Bassist Dimitrij Miller played in Ukrainian groups before he came to Austria to study music and joined Russkaja. The violinist Antonia-Alexa Georgiew , who has been with Russkaja since the ensemble was founded , turned to new tasks at the Salzburg Festival in 2013 and was replaced by Ulrike Müllner with her electric violin . In 2019 she also left the band and was replaced by Lea-Sophie Fischer.

history

In 2006 the band signed with the independent label Chat Chapeau, which mainly signs world music interpreters. In the same year she released an EP called Dawai . Russkaja became known to the wider masses through the Austrian late night show Willkommen Österreich , in which she acts as the house band. Her debut album Kasatchok Superstar , released in 2008, immediately reached a chart position in the Ö3 Austria Top 40 . Russkaja is known to reggae fans for participating in the title From East to West on the 2008 Mono & Nikitaman album Out of Control .

Most of the texts are in Russian , some also in English and German. The group has been known in the independent sector since it was founded and has been included in FM4 's program several times . The group made a name for itself as a live band in the Vienna East Club , and so far international inquiries have come from Switzerland , Turkey , Poland , Hungary and Germany . In 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2017 the band played at the Wacken Open Air , which is mainly aimed at metal fans . On May 30, 2008, they played at the 10th Schlossgrabenfest in Darmstadt , and on April 8, 2013, they appeared on the late-night show Circus HalliGalli . Most recently, Russkaja performed at the Rockharz in Ballenstedt, a festival that attracts around 20,000 visitors a year and in terms of its musical direction is comparable to the Wacken Open Air.
