Drahdiwaberl was a politically - anarchist oriented band that was founded in Austria in 1969 by Stefan Weber . Her trademark were shrill appearances against the " philistine bourgeoisie " and their moral ideas.

The name is derived from the Bavarian name for a top . The name literally means "turn you female". Colloquially, the term also describes an opportunist . From 1981 to 1995 the band was under contract with the Austrian label GIG Records .

General information about the band

Stefan Weber, at that time still a student at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna , was a participant in the left-wing student movements of the 1968 generation in Vienna and wanted to create a consciously left-wing mouthpiece with Drahdiwaberl. Viennese actionism had an important influence on the band . Breaking taboos and making provocative appearances have become the main means of expression over the years. So it came at concerts become a real scandal , as in the course of the stage show sexual intercourse was operated, the musicians wallowed in the dirt and food remnants and well-known politicians bizarre provocative satirized . Stefan Weber said in an interview with ORF in 2005 :

"It has always been my goal to make Drahdiwaberl the most extreme and obscene band - and I think we made it!"

- Stefan Weber

The left-wing lyrics of the band almost always referred to current political events throughout their creative years, always with a touch of cynicism and black humor . Topics that the band deals with again and again include racism in Austria, the RAF (Baader Meinhof Group), the FPÖ and George W. Bush .

The frequent change of band members is remarkable, especially in the first ten years. In addition to Stefan Weber, Thomas Rabitsch , Helmut Bibl , Fredl Petz, Silvia Gauder, Fritz Dürauer, Chris Bauer and Polio Brezina, the only permanent band members for several years, over 40 different musicians have already played in the band. Drahdiwaberl also worked with other famous Austrian musicians, such as Falco , Jazz Gitti , Dana Gillespie and Markus Spiegel .

From 1982 to 2007 the band worked on the film Weltrevolution (a cinematic story about Drahdiwaberl), which premiered in 2008 at the 37th Rotterdam Film Festival.

history

In the early years, Drahdiwaberl was primarily a cover band that interpreted pieces of music by bands such as Led Zeppelin , Rolling Stones and The Beatles in German. It was not until the mid-1970s that the band only performed songs that they had written themselves. During this time the first demo tapes were released. The band made their first official appearance in 1972 in the Audimax of the University of Vienna . In 1978 Falco joined the band, then still as Hans Hölzel. A year later the Austrian label Breaking Records released the punk music sampler Wiener Blutrausch , to which the band contributed three songs.

In 1981 Markus Spiegel signed the band to GIG Records . On this label, the band released a total of four albums in the 1980s, three of which were in the top ten of the domestic sales charts. Despite this success, the band was boycotted by the Austrian broadcasting station ORF until 1983 . However, when the band determined an appearance in the famous series Kottan and a short time later released the single Lonely with Lukas Resetarits , which brought them a national hit, the boycott was resolved.

The tours often took the band through Austria, Germany and Switzerland to Croatia. At the end of 1983 Falco left the band. Since the success of the band waned more and more from 1985, Weber decided to break up the band in 1989. The last concert in Vienna's Messepalast was recorded and released as a live VHS cassette.

Two years later, Stefan Weber received an invitation from the New York New Music Seminar to perform in front of around 10,000 spectators. To do this, he brought back some old bandmates and re-formed Drahdiwaberl. The performance became a scandal, as the band appeared with their regular stage show - it was also reported in the local press. In 1994 the fifth album was released, the subsequent commercial failure of which was followed by the break with their label. In the later 1990s the band was also active as a producer, so the sampler Oh Jesus was produced and published by Stefan Weber. The sixth album was completed in 2000 and made available to fans, it was the first release on an independent label. In 2003 Stefan Weber had to go to court because he appeared at a concert with a Colt with blank cartridges, but he was acquitted. In 2005 Weber received an Amadeus Austrian Music Award for his life's work to date , and for the first time publicly announced the planning of a Drahdiwaberl film.

After the release of Sitzpinkler , the band toured Germany for the first time since the 80s.

In 2008 the film World Revolution was finally completed and released. Since then the band has been quiet. Stefan Weber has not dissolved it to this day. He died on June 7, 2018. The penultimate concert took place on December 5, 2009 in the Vienna Gasometer. During the concert, some members announced that they wanted to retire. The last concert for the time being took place on May 11, 2013, as part of the Into the City Open Air.

style

music

Drahdiwaberl are difficult to classify musically. One of the reasons for this is the constantly changing line-up of the band. Even in the first few years, their pieces were characterized by a high degree of individuality, although the band almost exclusively performed cover versions of famous rock'n'roll pieces. Due to the bizarre mixture of jazz and blues , many pieces were hardly recognizable. In the 1970s they devoted themselves to punk rock with their political and aggressive lyrics , and distorted and deliberately badly tuned electric guitars and the rather cautious use of drums were decisive in this period . At the end of the 1970s, the band made music with a touch of psychedelic rock , especially the use of effects devices and Thomas Rabitsch's keyboard playing shaped the music. Wolfgang Staribacher also gave the pieces their own touch with his saxophone playing . With guitarist Wolfgang Blümel and singer Chris Bauer joining the band, some of their song structures moved towards heavy metal .

The band remained largely faithful to this wide range of styles throughout the 1980s, some albums were supplemented by non-music and chanson pieces in which politicians and social situations were satirized.

The album Sperminator from 1995 is a parody of hit music drawn with black humor . An accordion is used and the song structures are kept very simple. However, some tracks on the album are out of line (Killen Killen Killen, Censor Me) and are more avant-garde.

The two late albums Cake Instead of Words and Sitzpinkler are shaped by the New German Hardship . This creative phase is dominated by the massive use of electronic sounds (keyboard) and the heavily distorted electric guitars as well as continuous song structures.

There were also a lot of singers with Drahdiwaberl - and so there are many different vocal techniques , from the soft whisper of some guest singers to Weber's aggressive guttural singing .

live

Drahdiwaberl became known to the general public primarily through her live performances. Weber always emphasized that he wanted to do something for the audience so that they would be entertained. So the band decided to accompany their performances with a garish show. The first scandal was caused in 1972 when the band carved a roast pork during a concert in the Audimax of the University of Vienna . Since the show attracted attention, the decision was made to expand it further, orienting itself towards Viennese actionism. For example, things like electrical appliances were often destroyed on the stage, thrown with leftover food, or even print media that were perceived as racist, such as the Kronen Zeitung, torn up and urinated on them. Since the audience reacted very positively to this and at concerts every now and then people came on stage during the performance and wanted to participate, the band decided to perform with actors. In addition to the band, at some concerts there were more than 30 actors on stage who engaged in sexual intercourse, satirized politicians with skits and even urinated into the audience. Shows like the 1981 appearance in the Wiener Stadthalle (in which a local politician was hit by parts of a soup chicken) often ended with house bans and sanctions on the part of the organizers. The first concert after the reunification of the band at the Palladium in New York caused an international scandal, as the band organized a gangbang in which those involved wore the masks of well-known politicians. Media such as the New York Times , Bild and The Sun reported on this concert.
