Wolfgang Staribacher (born April 15, 1955 in Vienna ) is an Austrian musician. Wolfgang Staribacher is the son of the former Austrian Trade Minister Josef Staribacher and the brother of the former Austrian Finance Minister Andreas Staribacher . Nevertheless, Wolfgang Staribacher preferred to pursue a career in music rather than an economic career.

Life

Wolfgang Staribacher is a keyboardist , but he has become known across Europe primarily for his innovative way of playing the accordion . In addition, he acts as a band leader , composer and arranger . In this capacity he received numerous awards, including some gold and platinum records .

Even in his youth he was a member of numerous bands, including Stefan Weber's Drahdiwaberl from 1977 to 1982. At this time he also played with the rock band Acid and led a more commercial side project of "Drahdiwaberl" with Falco and Peter Vieweger under the English name " Spinning Wheel ”, which means roughly the same as the Viennese dialect expression“ Drahdiwaberl ”.

In 1986 he was the founder of the Alpinkatzen alongside Hubert von Goisern . With him he composed, wrote and edited the hits "Heast as nit" and "Koa Hiatamadl", among others. The Alpinkatzen were one of the forerunners of new folk music . In this musical style traditional folk music is mixed with rock elements.

In 1991 the Alpinkatzen took part in a tour of the alpine musical Der Watzmann ruft . A performance was recorded in the Munich Circus Krone . The almost 2 hour long film is entitled Watzmann live . Wolfgang Staribacher is also involved in the composition of some numbers in the musical. That year he also had the idea to found the Mozart band .

In 1992 he left the Alpinkatzen, but produced their second album Aufgeigen stått niederschiassen in his recording studio Staribacher (with the hit single Koa Hiatamadl ), which meant the breakthrough for the band and achieved quadruple platinum status.

In 1995 Wolfgang Staribacher finally founded the Mozart band , with which he celebrated great success. In the same year he also played a supporting role in the movie Before Sunrise, directed by Richard Linklater .

Since 2014 Staribacher has been the keyboardist and vocalist of the reunited rock band Acid .

In 2017, Wolfgang Staribacher and Bernhard Rabitsch founded a project for the New Wienerlied: "Im Packl", a formation that mixes traditional Viennese music from Wienerlied to classical with today's grooves, sounds and melodies.
