The Hallucination Company is an Austrian rock music theater project that was founded in 1977 in Vienna by the musician Ludwig "Wickerl" Adam . The relatively loosely organized band, with its line-up changing several times, became well known in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands in the early 1980s.

Band history

1977-1985

At the end of the seventies, a music group was formed around the Viennese "pope of the scene" Wickerl Adam as the first Viennese music theater . In 1977 Adam founded the Hallucination Company , still under the influence of the occupation and demolition of the Vienna Arena . The band operated modern rock music performance theater based on Frank Zappa with political aspirations, but had much more pronounced theatrical elements and was more stylistically oriented towards New Wave .

The first concerts took place as part of the culture project in the outskirts of Vienna's 22nd district. 1978 saw the first international tour with the show Hallucinations . By 1985 the Hallucination Company made around 1,350 appearances in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Hungary, Italy, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. The concerts with high-quality music, sophisticated arrangements, critical-ironic texts and a positive Love & Peace message were a success. As the geniuses from the Danube metropolis , they were announced in press releases on appearances in Germany.

The company became Austria's “talent factory”. Well-known artists who were significantly involved in the Hallucination Company at that time include:

  • Andy Baum - The guitarist and singer was a member of the band from 1982 to 1984.
  • Hans Hölzel (Falco) - Wickerl Adam recognized Hans Hölzel's potential when he saw him performing as a street musician in Mödling near Vienna and hired him as a bass player from 1977. His stage name Falco was established in 1978 during an appearance with the company in Munich, he remained a member until 1979.
  • Hansi Lang - From 1975 irregular engagement as composer and lead singer, with the Hallucination Company until 1980.
  • Miki Malör - The director and theater maker was engaged in the company as a musician and clown in 1982 and 1983.
  • Günter Mokesch - Mo was discovered by Adam in 1980 during a performance with his band Winter and engaged as a singer in the company until 1982.
  • Thomas Rabitsch - the musician, arranger and producer from Vienna was a founding member in 1977 and remained a member of the company until 1981.
  • Harri Stojka - The jazz musician was represented by the Hallucination Company from 1977 with irregular appearances.
  • Tini Kainrath - On the 1989 and 1993 albums
  • Geri Schuller - member from 1988 to 1998

1988-1997

After a two-year hiatus, Adam, who was employed as manager for Andy Baum during this time, brought the Hallucination Company back onto the stage. The cast included Geri Schuller , Tini Kainrath , Michael Schuberth , Stefan Bernheimer, Steffi Paschke , Jan Wessely, Yuki Nakano and Gerald Gradwohl . During this period, performances at the Special Nights in the Vienna Metropol took place. Both young new band members and changing star guests from the early years of the company performed at these events.

1998 until today

Wickerl Adam's project is still active today, initially without any major political claims. However, the formation could not reconnect with the great national successes from the early years. The alternating line-up includes Sigi Meier, Rue Kostron, Engel Mayr , Christoph Richter, Isabella Wagner, Peter Dürr, Hans "ANZO" Morawitz, Zebo Adam, Ulli Dattler and many other artists. In the period from 1988 to 2006, the Hallucination Company made about 500 performances.

In addition to the company, Adam is working on the project Sex Without Nails Bros. together with guitarist Conrad Schrenk . Only interpretations of Frank Zappa's compositions are produced. After several years of preparation, Schrenk and Adam brought an adaptation of Zappa's Joe's Garage on stage in 2003 on the tenth anniversary of the artist's death, unabridged as a rock muzzical .

In May 2006, Wickerl Adam received the Amadeus Austrian Music Award for his life's work to date.

Quotes

From an interview on the Amadeus award by Martin Schuster, CONCERTO:

  • Rainhard Fendrich in a personal conversation, quoted from Wickerl Adam: Servas Wickerl, how are you? Sitting on top of your mountain, look down at us and laugh at you idiots, right?
  • Wickerl Adam about Falco : Shortly before his death we met at a concert by Kula Shaker in the town hall. We had a very nice chat and I invited him to celebrate 20 years of the Hallucination Company with us. We met in the old rehearsal room, everyone who was still living from the old line-up at the time, namely Peter Kolbert on drums, Hölzl on bass, Thomas Rabitsch on keyboards, Gerald Gradwohl on guitar, who was at the time played in the current HC line-up. So we rehearsed, including «Zahuana», in which Hans invented the bass line. And he couldn't play it properly anymore ... Then we said goodbye like in the old days. But he didn't come to the gig, he pissed himself off. He has already sat on the plane on the way to the Caribbean and has not faced it. Well, we said goodbye to each other in this way.
  • Wickerl Adam on the company: I would like to play more. But I am not bought. I was a member of the A.mo.K. theater group for 4 years. - Working group on motor communication in the Dramatic Center Vienna. And that's why HC musicians are different: everyone has to do a body theater workshop with me, i.e. work 8 days without an instrument. And that's why the musicians differ in how they go on stage. My musicians know that the stage is a holy place, a place of worship, and we are the magicians. And we can make people laugh, cry, despair, run away - it's in our hands! So it's an incredible job. And if you treat it with respect, you can experience such beautiful things. My musicians have this knowledge, which means that they go on stage with a different attitude, such as it is compulsory to change clothes. With me you don't go on stage wearing street clothes.
