Dramatic center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dramatic Center Vienna (DZ) was a center for experimental theater in Vienna. Between 1972 and 1989 actors completed their training and courses in a double room. The DZ played a role in the development of the independent theater in Vienna as well as internationally.

history

In 1970, Horst Forester , dramaturge at the Burgtheater, proposed a concept for a new type of theater to the SPÖ Minister of Education, Leopold Gratz . Forester's declared aim was to familiarize the, in his opinion, stagnating theater scene in Vienna with international developments.

In 1972, the Dramatic Center was opened as the first Vienna center for experimental theater, with work and performance rooms on the first floor of the Palais Harrach in the 1st district of Vienna for several groups. In 1974, additional rehearsal rooms were rented at Sonnenfelsgasse 19. In 1975 the A.mo.K. theater laboratory was founded. Vienna (Motor Communication Working Group). In 1976 the company moved to the former master barracks at Seidengasse 13 in the 7th district. In 1989 the Dramatic Center closed.

Principles and goals

Horst Forester (1976): “Dramatists, actors from established theaters and members of independent groups, directors, educators, sociologists, dramaturges, stage designers, visual artists, theater scholars and the public have a common platform in the Dramatic Center; to try out plays, to get to know new modes of representation through practical experience, to listen to important playwrights and directors, to question them and to observe or take part in their work ”. The core of the work was:

  • dealing with the creation of, u. a. Eugenio Barba , Peter Brook and Jerzy Grotowski . These three are essential for the subsequent development of “free theater” not only in Vienna, but also internationally. They are representatives of a theater of experience that sees itself outside of the established theater system as free, mostly group-structured work and is strongly influenced by the artistic personalities involved.
  • The animation work, developed by the Viennese theater scholar Ilse Hanl , which was also based on personal development and group work, received strong impulses from Italy and France and, last but not least, also played a central pioneering role in theater education work with adults as well as children with regard to contemporary theater education.

As a result, the DZ organizes exchange programs with some of the most interesting theaters in Europe such as the Theater National Populaire , the Berliner Schaubühne , the Berliner Ensemble , the Milan Piccolo Teatro and the Theater de Soleil . Three defined pillars of the Dramatic Center are:

  1. Cooperation between authors and theater professionals : "(...) so that the authors learn what requirements the stage has, simply very simple, what do they have to take into account and how does it work ..." From 1972 onwards, the Dramatic Center awarded grants to a maximum of five young writers a year Jury from three board members and three authors were selected, first 6000, then 7000 schillings a month.
  2. "Sociocultural Animazione" - a kind of forerunner of today's theater education : The term " Animazione " originally comes from Italy from Gian Renzo Moreno's concept of " animazione teatrale ", which was made famous in 1968 by the Turin Teatro Stabile . The aim was to renew the children's theater in cooperation with educators and to adapt it to the needs of the children. Ilse Hanl was in charge of this project.
  3. Self- learning drama school : This resulted in the AMOK working group (working group on motor communication) founded by Herbert Adamec , one of the first scholarship recipients of the Dramatic Center, together with Hilde Berger from the group Torso and Georgij David , which existed from 1974 to 1980. The group was originally based on the physical theater of Jerzy Grotowskis and was dubbed by Theater Heute in 1976 as "one of the most exciting and intelligent" among the German-speaking experimental theaters.

According to the 1981 Art Report of the Federal Ministry for Education and the Arts, the function of the DZ is divided into the following four areas:

  1. Promotion and research of new ways of theater work : This is served by scholarship programs (BMUK), internships at partner stages all over Europe, guest performances by foreign stages, founding and supporting alternative theater groups as well as the installation of the theater laboratory and the implementation of numerous workshops.
  2. Training and further education : Acting seminars, street theater, training courses and seminars on body expression, breath and voice, daily physical training, pantomime and various dance training offers make up the annual work of the Dramatic Center
  3. Demand for Austrian drama : Scholarship programs, dramaturgical discussions and collaboration with Austrian authors form the basis of this activity
  4. Activities of socio-cultural animation : The Dramatic Center has made a significant contribution here by developing the target group theater, the apprentice theater and the senior play club.

In 1979 the Kronen Zeitung wrote on the cover "Drugs in the Dramatic Center" and in a double-page report about alleged drug use financed with taxpayers' money in the Dramatic Center. This leads to the short-term suspension of the funding. After a court hearing, the Kronen Zeitung has to publish a reply. This was also dealt with in the Austrian Parliament.
