Hubert "Hubsi" Kramar (born June 27, 1948 in Scheibbs ) is an Austrian actor , director , theater producer and actionist .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1969, Kramar traveled extensively before attending the Max Reinhardt Seminar , the Film School and the Dramatic Center in Vienna . He then studied postgraduate arts administration at Harvard University . This was followed by further training with Jerzy Grotowski in Poland, Jérôme Savary in Paris and La Mama in New York City .

Kramar had engagements at the Vienna State Opera and the Burgtheater as well as at German operas and theaters. From 1979 he founded his own theater groups such as the Theater Showinisten, Theater Direkt, TAT-Teata and WEARD t.atr. He also directed the Theater Gruppe 80 . In addition to various theoretical writings on independent theater, he also undertook some “theater direct actions” such as Hitler at the opera ball . Because of his art in public spaces, there were censorship measures and various legal proceedings. He is responsible for around 50 productions, and he wrote around 30 of his own plays and performances. Kramar had 40 television and film roles as an actor. He was awarded the Kainz Medal .

Political actionism

Hubert Kramar (2008)

Kramar is a sympathizer of the left movement in Austria and repeatedly participates in corresponding actions in this scene. He became known to the wider public when, in the course of a protest against the black and blue government in a Nazi uniform and mustache , he wanted to attend the opera ball dressed as Adolf Hitler and was arrested. The weekly newspaper Falter reported on the front page with a photo of the arrest and the headline "Austria as it really is: Adolf Hitler arrested immediately." In 2003 he campaigned for the preservation of the Ernst Kirchweger House . In 2004 he stood symbolically in twentieth place for the LINKE list in the European elections .

On February 23, 2009 Kramar's so-called "Keller-Soap" Pension-Fritzl , a satirical farce about how the media dealt with incest and violence in the family, using the example of the Josef Fritzl case , premiered in Vienna's 3raum-Anatomietheater . The advance notice for the play triggered a wave of hostility in tabloid media such as Heute and the Kronen Zeitung as well as on the part of the FPÖ and, as a result, global media interest , even before it was even written and its content was known . Around 120 journalists from Germany and abroad came to the first performance of the play, which took place under police protection after the campaign of the previous weeks and several death threats against Kramar.

Media interest quickly ebbed when it turned out that the play was not about the incest case in Amstetten, but about the media industry. The German newspaper Die Welt wrote that Kramar had “succeeded in fooling the world press. [...] “Pension F. formerly Pension Fritzl” is exactly what the author and director had promised in the subtitle: “The ultimate media satire”. A farce in three acts: The first was the press conference on the tabloid excitement after the project was announced. The second took place in Kramar's “3-room anatomy theater”, which is protected by the police, at the premiere of the play. The third will take place in the Lower Austrian capital St. Pölten, where the trial of the Amstetten incest case will begin in a few weeks. A work in progress. [...] the self-exposure of an industry unwilling to reflect, Kramar succeeded brilliantly. ".

On March 16, 2009, the first day of the trial against Josef F., Kramar staged another act dealing with the public handling of the case in front of the assembled journalists in front of the regional court in St. Pölten . Accompanied by an actress and an actor, he drove up in a white stretch limousine. The man, with blood-red paint around his mouth, carried naked baby dolls attached to a white suit, and Kramar said: "This whole thing is a Hollywood production, the media have to meet their quotas and make the sacrifices quotas". According to the Austrian daily newspaper , he is said to have repeatedly shouted “Pimmel, Pimmel!” . He explained the action as a criticism of the “media pornography” and “pathological staging” surrounding the case .
