occupation

Defenseless is a television film from the crime series Tatort , which was first broadcast on April 23, 2017 on ORF , Erste and SRF 1 . It is the 1020th episode in the series, the 40th case of the Austrian investigator Moritz Eisner and the 16th joint case of the Eisner / Fellner investigative team .

action

During a night break-in, the intruder is startled by two shots in the neighborhood. During his escape, he discovered a corpse in a neighboring house. Bibi Fellner is in the process of registering with her real name on the online single exchange “Lonely Hearts” when she is called to a mission. Moritz Eisner cannot be reached by phone, so she drives to his apartment, but to her surprise, it is not Eisner who opens the door, but his new friend Samy Graf. When they arrive at the scene of the crime, Eisner and Fellner are informed that there are two bodies, which are Peter Kralicek, head of the Vienna Police School , and his wife Elena. The investigators initially assume a marriage drama in which Kralicek first killed his wife and then committed suicide with his service weapon. At the scene of the crime there is a loud argument between Fellner and Eisner, as Fellner is of the opinion that, as a close colleague, Eisner could have told her about his relationship with Samy.

The ballistic tests show that the projectile that killed Peter Kralicek did not come from his service weapon. So the investigators are not only dealing with a marriage drama, but with murder. The ammunition is a special make to which only a few police officers have access. The perpetrator is therefore to be looked for in one's own ranks. Neighbors claim to have heard not just one but two gunshots. However, forensics was only able to secure one projectile, so the investigators assume that Peter Kralicek first fired at his killer before he was fatally hit himself.

Ernst Rauter takes the dispute between Fellner and Eisner in front of the entire team at the crime scene as an opportunity to be able to covertly investigate: Fellner is supposed to resign in the course of a new, this time staged dispute and be transferred to the police school. She is put before Thomas Nowak as acting head of the school, who is not very enthusiastic about it. Fellner was soon systematically bullied by him ; For example, a printout of her profile can be found on the bulletin board on the dating site "Lonely Hearts" , in the car glove compartment of the dry alcoholic there are small liquor bottles and in the desk drawer there is a hip flask. When Fellner found out that Nowak had a relationship with the police student Katja Humbold, he immediately reciprocated and tried to denounce her, claiming that Fellner had a relationship with a subordinate police officer. She had only let one colleague spend the night with her who had not dared go home because of a marital crisis.

In the meantime, Eisner's colleague Manfred Schimpf discovered a threat by text message on the dead person's cell phone, which was not intended for her but for her husband and which ultimately triggered the escalating marital dispute. Elena Kralicek had met the senders of the message with the nickname " Bonnie and Clyde " behind her husband's back in the restaurant "Romanticka" . From Inkasso-Heinzi, Fellner's contact from her time at Sitte, who runs the “Romanticka”, the tip comes that it is the “stupid Bonny” and the “sweet Clyde” - with real names Daniela and Florian Maurer - should act. He had witnessed the meeting of the three and discovered that "Bonnie and Clyde" wanted to blackmail the woman, but she had left the bar in a hurry. Daniela Maurer is now in custody for stolen goods and Moritz Eisner learns from her that Florian broke into Kralicek's house some time ago and stole a notebook there, among other things . On this there were videos with which the two wanted to blackmail Kralicek. However, the device disappeared without a trace from the evidence room, where it was deposited as stolen property after Daniela's arrest.

So Nowak comes more and more under suspicion, especially since he devotes so much energy to denouncing Fellner in order to get rid of her, which makes him even more suspicious. Fellner has his service weapon examined, but the shot test is negative. A little later, Nowak is found shot dead in his car. Several students take this as an opportunity to tell what really happened in the police school and the means by which their instructors put them under pressure. Since many of these humiliations were even filmed by their instructors, the investigators get a visual impression of the atrocities.

Although Kralicek's notebook has disappeared, there is a data stick on which Florian Maurer saved the videos. On these videos, Nowak and Kralicek can be seen with police students playing brutal sex games, including the police student Katja Humbold and the police student Tobias Pohl. Pohl was killed in a car accident and Katja Humbold is certain that he caused the accident himself because of the psychological stress. Eisner now draws conclusions because Tobias Pohl is the son of his police colleague Stefan Pohl. He confronts Pohl and learns from him that he had discovered the videos with his son on the notebook when he wanted to determine the owner of the device as part of his work. He confesses to having murdered Kralicek to avenge his son. During this argument he was shot in the stomach, which he was able to keep secret the whole time. However, he claims to have not committed Nowak's murder. Katja Humbold, responsible for this murder, is found hanged by Eisner and Fellner.

Reviews

Thomas Gehringer from Tittelbach.tv described the film as a “blatant” crime scene case with “Austrian nasty comedy” in the first half of the film, which is increasingly becoming serious. Some things are predictable, but the script and direction are convincing "with a dramaturgy that gradually increases the anxiety and narrates the tragedy consistently."

“This 'crime scene' […] is a bit rough, but the Fellner character is used cleverly. It is the perfect alternative to the aggressive testosterone stenz Nowak, and not because it reacts to it with an equally aggressive estrogen resistance, but because its appearance is more ambivalent, but also more efficient. "

In Switzerland, the crime scene was viewed on SRF 1 by 414,000 viewers and achieved a market share of 22.1%.

controversy

After a series of complaints from executive circles after this Tatort episode was broadcast, the trade unionist Reinhard Zimmermann from the Christian trade unionist group wrote a letter to ORF General Director Alexander Wrabetz in which he criticized the Austrian consequences of the Tatort series. According to this, the police work is misrepresented on many points, and the German consequences are much closer to reality. Zimmermann demanded a truthful representation of the profession for his colleagues. The ORF responded with a written statement in which it was emphasized that it was not a detailed reproduction of police reality, but a fictional program.
