The Art of War is a television film from the crime series Tatort , which was first broadcast on September 4, 2016 on ORF and on Erste . It is the 992nd episode in the series, the 38th case of the Austrian investigator Moritz Eisner and the fourteenth joint case of the Eisner / Fellner investigative team.
action
A dead person is found in a villa on the outskirts of Vienna. A Parson Russell Terrier , the murdered man's dog, had sounded the alarm until the annoyed neighbors called the police and found the body. The investigation shows that the murder was preceded by torture. The victim is found with his head stuck in a dresser drawer, both hands and tongue missing. These were cut off while he was still alive. The identity is initially unclear, due to the circumstances of the death, the investigators suspect Lieutenant Colonel Moritz Eisner and Major Bibi Fellner a connection with organized crime .
The victim is subsequently identified as a Turkish businessman who runs the Ali Baba kebab restaurant . In the restaurant they meet the manager Ramazan Tagaev, who tries to get rid of the two officers quickly. Elsner and Fellner agree that the restaurant is used for money laundering . In the course of further investigations, the victim's apartment turns out to be an illegal brothel. Daniela Vopelka from the department for organized crime investigators leads to the Young Ukrainian Victoria Oshchypko, who was forced in the house of the victim into prostitution. Through her, the officers learned of a human trafficking ring to which the dead man belonged. Over the ring refugees to Austria funneled to them to abuse here as slave labor or prostitution. However , Oshchypko did not know the real name of her pimp , she was only allowed to call him boss .
One clue leads to the recently released pimp Andy Mittermeier, an acquaintance of Fellner from her time with the custom . He admits he knew the victim. The officials suspect that he wanted to take over the area of the murder victim and thus had a clear motive for the crime. Eisner tries to increase the pressure on Mittermeier in order to lure him out of the reserve. Mittermeier declares war on him, the terrier Percy and Eisner are poisoned in Mittermeier's bar, Eisner barely survives. On the roof terrace of one of the blocks of the Alt-Erlaa residential park , there is a showdown between Eisner and Mittermeier, in which Mittermeier and his bodyguard , an Asian fighter, are shot by snipers from the Cobra task force .
Background and production
The film was shot from March 16 to April 14, 2015 in Vienna and the surrounding area. This Tatort episode was produced by the Superfilm film production company . The audio description for the film was produced by ORF itself , as was the case with its predecessor , and Stefanie Müller was again the speaker.
The title refers to the book of the same name by Sunzi on war strategy and warfare. The pimp Andy Mittermeier , embodied by Michael Fuith, has Chinese characters from this work tattooed on his fingers, and he also quotes from the book in some sequences. In this episode, the investigators are supported by the former SOKO Kitzbühel police officer Kristina Sprenger in the role of Daniela Vopelka from the Organized Crime Department .
On the Internet, the fan community of the Austria Tatort series mourned the terrier dog Percy, who was called Rocky in real dog life and was 10 years old at the time.

Reviews
Roger Tell from tittelbach.tv wrote: “The film awaits with morbid charm, a strong atmosphere, nasty types and a story that is typical for the ORF contributions to the renowned crime series. [...] Author-director Thomas Roth does not spare the audience, shows ruthlessness and brutality, focuses on topical and explosive topics such as smuggling and refugee exploitation. The fact that he uses one or the other cliché is probably inevitable, but it diminishes the very good overall impression somewhat. "
Christian Buß from Spiegel Online criticized the film as a little too sweet for its topic , it looked like an attempt to continue the episode Counted from 2013, which was awarded the Grimme Prize. Compared to the episode also staged and precisely researched by Thomas Roth The code name Kidon would seem like the information in The Art of War thrown in, the figure Andy Mittermeier appears in his fur-trimmed coat a bit like [...] how the director of a school theater performance Mackie Messer might imagine.
