True lies is a television film from the crime series Tatort , which was first broadcast on January 13 , 2019 on ORF , in the program Das Erste and on SRF 1 . It is the 1080th episode in the series, the 44th case of the Austrian investigator Moritz Eisner and the 20th joint case of the Eisner / Fellner investigative team .

action

In this episode, the investigators Moritz Eisner and Bibi Fellner are called to the Salzkammergut , where a female corpse was found in the Wolfgangsee during a diving exercise by the fire brigade . The victim was shot with a weapon made by SIG Sauer , which is used as a police weapon in many European countries, and then sunk in a car in the lake. The murder weapon was not registered and the serial number was removed. Investigations into the car lead the investigators to the identity of the dead: It is the 36-year-old German journalist Sylvie Wolter from Hamburg, who had rented the vehicle for a long time. She had been reported missing by her partner, Sybille Wildering, a few weeks earlier.

Wolter had last researched in Vienna for a story about illegal arms deals, abuse of office, infidelity and illegal party financing and then later disappeared without a trace. On a memory card of the victim there are photos of old newspaper articles about former Austrian defense ministers , including Karl Lütgendorf and Robert Lichal .

As a result, Eisner and Fellner interviewed Wolter's partner and their informant, the former police officer Hans-Werner Kirchweger. He is skeptical of the suicide thesis about the death of the death of former Defense Minister Karl Lütgendorf, which has not been fully clarified after decades . Kirchweger's father was a hunting friend of Lütgendorf. He informs Eisner and Fellner about the illegal arms deals in Lütgendorf. Two months earlier, Kirchweger had received a document written by Lütgendorf in which he feared he would be killed by a contract killer.

Eisner and Fellner's investigations into the old case call the General Directorate for Homeland Security on the scene. On the part of the General Director, Dr. Maria Digruber, who has little interest in clearing up this politically uncomfortable case, and her secretary Lukas Kragl, pressure is put on the investigators and their superiors, Rauter. Eisner and Fellner continue anyway and find documents on the Lütgendorf case in the Austrian State Archives . They soon come to the conclusion that the murder of the journalist and the historical criminal case should indeed have something to do with one another.

The investigators learn from Wolter's editor-in-chief that Sybille Wildering has taken her partner's documents from her office. It contains photos of the industrialist David Weimann, owner of the Geverin company. According to Digruber, however, this is a blank slate. Wildering then made contact with Weimann on his own initiative. She learns from him that he had a relationship with Sylvie Wolter. Weimann claims to the investigators not to know Wildering. Wildering reports to Fellner and states that he feels persecuted by Weimann. Fellner takes Wildering in temporarily.

Kirchweger informs Eisner that he is in possession of Lütgendorf's diary and would like to meet him the next day in Vienna, but does not appear at the agreed meeting point. Kirchweger is found dead on Vienna's Höhenstrasse , the situation is similar to that of Lütgendorf, and in this case too, suicide is initially suspected.

Digruber continues to put pressure on the investigators. You should put the current case on file as unsolved because it jeopardizes the investigation in a higher priority case. There is a connection to Digruber in Kirchweger's documents. She is said to have ensured the retirement of Kirchweger. Eisner and Fellner learn from Rauter that someone from the Ministry of the Interior is said to have been in contact with Weimann via email for a long time. However, all emails were deleted from the Ministry's website, but Weimann's side must have received them. The two meet with Digruber's secretary Lukas Kragl and confront him with the allegations.

Wolter's editor-in-chief says that Wolter wanted to end her research because of her relationship with Weimann. Fellner now suspects that it could have been a murder out of jealousy and that Sybille Wildering wanted to take revenge on Wolter and Weimann. Shortly afterwards Wildering and Weimann are found seriously injured in their hotel room, Weimann succumbs to his injuries. Weimann wanted to kill Wildering with a pistol, but despite being shot through the shoulder, Wildering managed to shoot Weimann in the face with his own weapon. Wildering admits to having murdered Wolter.

Digruber leaves the ministry and gets a top job at a bank, her successor being Lukas Kragl. The forensic medicine report shows that Kirchweger was shot and the suicide was staged. Rauter therefore raises the question of whether Lütgendorf was also murdered.

Reviews

Volker Bergmeister from tittelbach.tv found that the author and director Thomas Roth had "succeeded in creating a well-designed, exciting thriller" in which there was less action than discussion. The film relies on a lot of dialogue, which takes the flow of the story a bit. The usual humor and the viciousness of the inspectors also lagged behind other consequences. The tone is almost entirely serious, "this political story would not tolerate a relaxed tone".

“Author and director Thomas Roth had previously staged a Viennese 'Tatort' about criminal business related to the Iranian nuclear deal like an espionage thriller from the Cold War; his new episode is also old school in the best sense of the word. This is also due to the fact that, without a lot of pseudo-modern frills, he rolls up the historical case in the face of a changing police routine. "

“It is the 20th episode with Neuhauser and Krassnitzer, whose popularity is based on a principle that is suitable for Sunday evenings: morality beats immorality. Two good people fight evil, and in the end the good guys win. They even win against their inner devils. On the one hand, this creates a feeling of homeliness. On the other hand: Heat can also be expected at some point. "

Audience rating

The first broadcast of True Lies on January 13, 2019 was seen by 10.45 million viewers in Germany and achieved a market share of 29% for Das Erste . The film was thus one of five Tatort episodes that reached more than ten million viewers in Germany in 2019.

The first broadcast was followed by an average of 975,000 viewers on ORF , with a market share of 28%.

controversy

In September 2019, the ORF issued an editorial apology because ex-Defense Minister Robert Lichal saw himself misrepresented: "[...] Embedded in the fictional plot, the claim was made in the role dialogue that Dr. Lichal had to resign as minister. The editorial team and production regret that this was a historically incorrect explanation because Dr. Lichal neither had to resign nor has resigned. No defamation was intended, nor should a proximity to the case discussed in the film be insinuated. The relevant film passages will be changed accordingly. "
