Virus is a television film from the crime series Tatort , which was first broadcast on August 27, 2017 on ORF , in the program Das Erste and on SRF 1 . It is the 1026th episode in the series, the 41st case of the Austrian investigator Moritz Eisner and the 17th joint case of the Eisner / Fellner investigative team .

action

The two police officers are called to the Hirschgraben, a quarry near the Styrian community of Pöllau , where the body of a 40-year-old African is found. The victim is found dead by stones without papers, it is initially unclear whether it is an accident or a murder case. After a demolition was planned the day before - allegedly to meet official requirements - the investigators suspect that the body should be buried under the rubble to make it disappear. Missing battle marks, however, indicate a possible work accident. Demolition master Baric and his colleague make no secret of their aversion to the refugees.

Near the quarry, the doctor Dr. Albert Reuss, who worked for aid organizations in various countries for years, set up the "Fluchthof", a refugee accommodation for Africans. Several families are housed here, the men are occasionally employed in the quarry. The quarry is operated by Thomas Reuss, Albert's younger brother. At the escape courtyard nobody can or wants to say anything about the identity of the deceased. Albert Reuss makes an honest and selfless impression on the investigators, in contrast to his brother Thomas. His vehicle was recorded by a wildlife camera at the time of the crime , Reuss claims to have made a patrol .

The autopsy of the victim shows that he was already dead when he was deposited in the quarry. Fellner thinks that the victim's hands are too clean for an employee in the quarry. There is also a rash as an allergic reaction to refreshing tissues from a certain airline, West African Air (WAA). Via their passenger list, the victim can be identified as Dr. Identify Kamil Daouda Maka. He was also infected with the Ebola virus. Access roads to the village are immediately blocked off, the epidemic squad moves in, and the outbreak of Ebola threatens. Eisner and Fellner also had contact with the infected corpse and could therefore also have become infected.

Fellner finds himself at the Fluchthof in Dr. Reuss medication for post-traumatic stress disorder , you can also find out via the student directory of the University of Vienna that Reuss and Maka were enrolled there at the same time . Bibi is led by Dr. Reuss overwhelmed and tied up. A family is missing at the Fluchthof; they are discovered by a few forest workers in the forest. The man had seen the victim at the escape courtyard on the night of his death. Dr. Kamil Daouda Maka threatened Dr. Reuss, because Reuss is said to have broken his oath in Africa and returned to Austria. Maka wanted to make the European public aware of the problems in Africa by bringing Ebola to Europe. Reuss wants to prevent Maka from his plan and pushes him to the ground in an argument, Maka hits his head. Dr. Reuss himself was infected with the Ebola virus and blows up himself and the Hirschgraben.

reception

Reviews

Volker Bergmeister from tittelbach.tv said that moving the explosive topic out of the big city of Vienna to the provinces was a wise move, as the threat could be staged more densely, the village square would become the central point, one saved crowd scenes and would Break down global threats in a manageable way. The film has everything a good television thriller needs: strong characters, an exciting staging and a gripping story. In addition, a moral and political theme was incorporated with a clear, but entertainingly packaged message: "If we don't help fight the epidemics in poor countries, they will come to us."

The NWZ Online compared the film in terms of visual language with the Tatort episode Schutzlos (2015).

Christian Buß from Spiegel Online said that the dialogues were polished to the point, “that one quickly loses sight of the concentrated misery of the acute refugee, third world and epidemic scenario.” Jokes and world politics are too fast change, refugee questions merged with aspects of epidemic paranoia.

Isabella Wallnöfer rated the film in the daily newspaper Die Presse with 8.5 out of 10 points. Despite the drama of the subject, this episode - mostly at the expense of the officials - has some smirking moments. For example, when Schimpf is reprimanded by his boss for his nutritional behavior and describes an official trout as a “capital crime in terms of nutrition”. The coordinator of the official epidemiological protection measures acts like a gobbled colleague from MA 2412 . However, the disease protection activities would be applied very thickly. "The author and director have researched and brought up all the guns for the dramatization". Barbara Eder said in the press: "Some things are exaggerated, that is due to the dramaturgy - but there really is a lot." For example the "Snow White sack" in which people suspected of having an epidemic are transported.

“All in all, a very decent crime thriller; can certainly be repeated next summer. "
