Alexander Wrabetz
Alexander Wrabetz (* 21st March 1960 in Vienna ) is Director General of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), who studied a lawyer who previously worked in senior positions in government-related business enterprises and is a former National Chairman of the Association of Socialist Students of Austria .
education
Wrabetz grew up in Vienna- Döbling in a family that was politically close to the FPÖ. His father was a lawyer for the FPÖ in the 1970s. From 1970 to 1978 Alexander Wrabetz attended the 2nd Federal High School XIX Vienna in Döbling. He studied law at the University of Vienna and obtained his doctorate in 1983. jur.
During his studies Wrabetz got involved with the later Federal Chancellors Alfred Gusenbauer and Werner Faymann in the area of the SPÖ . For the parliamentary elections in 1983 , he organized the successful preferential votes Election Campaign of Josef Cap , former media spokesman and club chairman of the Social Democratic National Group . From 1983 to 1984 he was federal chairman of the Association of Socialist Students in Austria . With Wrabetz as chairman and top candidate, the association achieved the best result in its history to date in the 1983 ÖH elections with 26% of the vote.
Professional career
During his studies Wrabetz was a. a. also freelancer for ORF Vienna. After graduating in 1983, he completed his court year . From 1984 to 1987 Wrabetz worked in the giro center and bank of Österreichische Sparkassen AG . In 1987 he moved to the Austrian Industrial Management Company (ÖIAG) as assistant to the board , was managing director of Voest Alpine Intertrading GmbH in Linz from 1992 and then, from 1995 to 1998, member of the board of VAMED in Vienna , which was also part of ÖIAG at the time . He was a member of the supervisory board of several ÖIAG companies and, from 1995, a member of the ORF Board of Trustees , the predecessor body of today's ORF Foundation Council .
Gerhard Weis , Director General of ORF from 1998 to 2001, appointed him commercial director of the company, where Monika Lindner confirmed him during her term of office. Due to the outsourcing of the ORF broadcasting technology and its sale to a consortium with the participation of the Raiffeisen Group, Wrabetz was able to present the highest operating profit in the history of ORF in 2005.
Wrabetz is a member of the Executive Board of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU / UER) and the Supervisory Board of the Austrian Lotteries gaming group . In October 2019 he was elected President of the Prix Europa as the successor to Cecilia Benkö Lamborn at the Steering Committee meeting . Before that he was a member of the governing body as Vice President.
ORF General Director
Wrabetz was nominated as a candidate for election to general director by the ORF board members Huberta Gheneff-Fürst, Peter Fichtenbauer (both close to the FPÖ), Karl Krammer (close to the SPÖ) and Pius Strobl ( close to the Greens ). On August 17, 2006, he was elected in the first ballot with 20 of 35 possible votes to succeed Monika Lindner, who had also applied for the position. Wrabetz 'election was made by the foundation board of the ORF, which was made up according to the requirements of the ORF law: In addition to the "circles of friends" of the SPÖ, the Greens and the FPÖ, four of the five BZÖ foundation boards and two members of the foundation board assigned to the ÖVP voted for Wrabetz . He started work on January 1st, 2007. With the start of April 10, 2007, it promised the "largest program reform in the history of ORF".
In April 2011 he announced that he would run for re-election in August 2011. On the afternoon of August 9, 2011, he was reappointed with 29 votes out of 35. Since 1967 Wrabetz is only the second ORF boss after Gerd Bacher, who was re-elected. On August 9, 2016, he was elected ORF General Director for the third time in a row.
On November 13, 2009, Wrabetz launched its in-house online TV media library, and on October 26, 2011, the new ORF special interest channels ORF III and ORF Sport + went on air. ORFIII is a culture-related channel, ORF Sport + is a special-interest channel for Austrian fringe sports. In addition, ORFeins began broadcasting in the HD TV standard in 2008, followed by ORF2 in HD TV in 2009. In 2017 Wrabetz announced the launch of an ORF player for streaming use.
In December 2011 Wrabetz's planned appointment of the previous ORF Board of Trustees and spokesman for the local SPÖ “Circle of Friends” Niko Pelinka as his office manager sparked discussions and protests from the ORF editors. The former governor and SPÖ politician Gabi Burgstaller criticized the allocation of posts without an advertisement as damaging for the ORF. On January 19, 2012, Pelinka withdrew his application for the position due to ongoing protests by ORF editors.
Since the fall of the monopoly and the market entry of private television and radio, ORF's market shares have been falling. With a market share of 33.9% on television (2017) and a market share of 71% on radio (2017), ORF is still the Austrian market leader today.
family
Alexander Wrabetz is divorced. He was married to his ex-wife, the general practitioner and sports medicine specialist Petra Wrabetz, until 2015 and has two sons (* 1988 and 1991) and a daughter (* 1993) with her.
