Niko Pelinka

Nikolaus "Niko" Pelinka (born October 14, 1986 in Vienna ) is an Austrian agency manager, entrepreneur and former PR man , lobbyist and media officer. From April 2010 to December 2011 he was a member of the ORF - Foundation Board and Speaker (leader) of the local Social Democratic Party - "Circle of Friends".

Life

Niko Pelinka is the son of journalist Peter Pelinka and nephew of political scientist Anton Pelinka . He grew up in Vienna-Josefstadt and joined the SPÖ as a student. After graduating from high school and completing his community service , he worked, among other things, as vice-editor-in-chief of the online youth magazine CHiLLi.cc and as a domestic political volunteer at “ Standard ”. In 2006 he became a parliamentary assistant for Andreas Schieder , and in 2007 press spokesperson for Minister of Education Claudia Schmied . In 2007/08, he completed the university course in political communication at the University for Continuing Education in Krems . From 2010 to the end of 2011 he was appointed by Christian Kern as a lobbyist and employee in the Public Affairs department for ÖBB . In April 2010 he became the ORF Board of Trustees and at the same time replaced Karl Krammer as head of the so-called SPÖ “Circle of Friends” (the largest “parliamentary group” in the Board of Trustees).

Pelinka ran in several elections (Vienna state election 2005, National Council election 2006, National Council election 2008, Vienna state election 2010) in an ineligible position.

In December 2011 it was announced that ORF General Director Alexander Wrabetz would like to appoint Pelinka as his new office manager on January 1, 2012. At the end of 2011, he therefore resigned from the management of the Freundeskreis and from his board of trustees mandate. The planned appointment was heavily criticized by the ÖVP , FPÖ , the Greens and the ORF editors, who saw the political independence and reputation of the ORF at risk. The editors resisted Pelinka's appointment with an internal petition. They also wrote an open letter asking him to withdraw his application. Pelinka complied with this request on January 19th. With his withdrawal, he wanted to " avoid further underhand attacks against me, my family and my personal environment ", he could neither expect himself nor the ORF to " continue this unworthy theater for weeks ".

Pelinka has been the second managing director of the Vienna-based media holding company Kobza Media Group since March 2012 . The holding company has stakes in the agencies KTHE, Diego5, alpha_z and in the media companies R9 and biber. Pelinka is also co-founder of the “Bieder & Maier” cafe brand, which won the ADC New York Award in 2019 for the world's best packaging design. Pelinka is also a founder of the international digitization conference "Darwin's Circle", in which personalities from the digital scene such as Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales , Alexander Karp , Markus Braun and N26 co-founder Valentin Stalf have taken part in recent years .

Together with Eveline Steinberger-Kern , he heads the Innovation Club, which is supposed to promote the exchange between Austria and Silicon Valley.

Until 2016, Pelinka is completing the part-time Executive MBA program at Hult International in London.

reception

In the ORF satirical program Wir Staatskünstler , Niko Pelinka's allegedly great influence on the content of public broadcasting was parodied, while Pelinka was played by Nicholas Ofczarek .

In January 2012 Elfriede Jelinek published the text Der kleine Niko , in which she sharply criticized Niko Pelinka's appointment as ORF office manager and the “SPÖ's career model” and saw the end of social democracy.
