Özlem Ünsal (born May 16, 1974 in Kırıkkale , Turkey ) is a German politician ( SPD ).

Career

Özlem Ünsal grew up in Lübeck and has German citizenship .

From 1994 she worked for ten years as a volunteer educational mentor for illiterate people and children and young people from disadvantaged families. In 1997 she moved to Kiel to study political science , sociology and psychology at Christian-Albrechts-Universität . There she took over the chairmanship of the Turkish student union from 1999 to 2003. In the following year she was one of the founders of the political science association “Amani International”.

After completing her Magister Artium (MA), she was employed by the Arbeiterwohlfahrt , Kreisverband Kiel, from 2004 to 2013 , where she worked in migration counseling. From 2005 to 2013 Özlem Ünsal headed the forum for migrants of the state capital Kiel, from 2011 to 2014 he was a member of the advisory board of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Gender Research and Diversity at the University of Applied Sciences in Kiel and was an expert for youth protection in Schleswig-Holstein.

In 2013 she moved to the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of the Interior and Federal Affairs as a policy adviser and deputy head of department for immigration.

Honorary and main political positions

Since 2011 she has been a member of the spokesperson's council of the women's alliance in Kiel, and since 2012 the board of the working group of social democratic women in Kiel. On October 1, 2012, she was elected to the state board of the newly founded working group Migration and Diversity of the SPD Schleswig-Holstein, for which she is also a delegate in the SPD state party council.

In the municipal elections in Schleswig-Holstein in 2013 , she was elected to the Kiel council assembly for constituency 13 (southern inner city), and since shortly after the election she has also been in charge of constituency 12 (Hassee-Uhlenkrog / Schützenpark). She is economic policy spokeswoman and deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group and represents the city on the supervisory boards of Seehafen Kiel GmbH & Co KG and Kieler Wirtschaftsförderungs- und Strukturentwicklungs-GmbH (KiWi). She has been a member of the board of the Kiel-Süd local association since 2016, and has been deputy chairwoman of the SPD district association in Kiel since February 2017.

For the 2017 state election , Ünsal was nominated as an SPD candidate in constituency 16 (Kiel-West) to succeed Jürgen Weber . With 36.6% of the first votes, she entered the state parliament.
