The Salt Baron is a television series from 1993 based on a presentation by Dieter Limbek . The idea for the film came from Hellmut Andics , and Bernd Fischerauer is responsible for the script and direction . The series is a genre picture from the late imperial period and gives an insight into the depths of the company in the period before the First World War .

action

Alexander Wandrusch, called Xandl, Rittmeister in the pay of a second-class captain, is an officer , a lovable Filou and a womanizer. But his love affairs are going better than the money deals - he is heavily in debt. He is stationed in barren Galicia . Since he is not a nobleman, advancement in the Austro-Hungarian army is difficult.

In July 1912, a telegram informed him of the death of Baroness Josefine von Glempegg in Bad Ischl . She had once made it possible for Alexander, her husband's son, to attend the cadet school with a maid . Now she has left him an estate, the “Salzhof” and an annual deputation . The legitimate son, Alphons von Glempegg, legation counselor in the Foreign Ministry, furiously leaves the opening of the will. He sees his family's honor injured and seeks revenge on his half-brother.

This unexpected inheritance is set to change Xandl's life fundamentally. Full of expectation, he enters a world whose transience is becoming more and more apparent. In Ischl, Xandl is confronted with a strange world. His former comrade Ferdinand (Ferry) von Hauser, whom he meets again here, introduces him to society. Every year, when Emperor Franz Joseph I sets up his summer residence in Bad Ischl , the small spa town in the Salzkammergut becomes the center of the world. The success of the dashing Rittmeister with the ladies is not long in coming. Helene von Mitzko, Ferry's fiancée, falls in love with him at first sight. Her father, the extremely rich “coal king” Baron von Mitzko, is meanwhile in financial difficulties. In order to rehabilitate the ailing Korda works, he wants to get an order for the newly developed K-30 cannon with the help of Inspector General Saratzky, which the Kaiser has so far refused. All means are right for him.

In the course of the series, not only Lotti and Helene von Mitzko fall in love with the Rittmeister, but also the beautiful laundress Lisa Hopfinger. However, the happiness of the two is short-lived, as it turns out that Lisa too is the result of a mistake by the Baron von Glempegg with a housekeeper. She found a friend and supporter in the old Prince von und zu Lieben, who enabled her to pursue a career as an operetta singer and thus a better life. After the prince's death, Lisa goes to Vienna.

Alma von Glempegg gambled away the family jewelry and pledged her husband's secret documents, which fell into the hands of Prince Naryschkin. Alma asks Captain Wandrusch to help her get the documents back and offers him love services. Prince Naryshkin is exposed as a spy and kills himself. Baron von Mitzko is also incriminated by the documents. Wandrusch is promoted to major in the General Staff.

The engagement between Helene and Ferry breaks up when he learns from Helene that she has a son. Helene then leaves the Mitzko house and moves to Wandrusch in the Salzhof.
