Towje Kleiner (born April 4, 1948 in Föhrenwald , today a district of the city of Wolfratshausen , Bavaria ; † January 9, 2012 in Munich ) was a German actor and screenwriter .

Life

Born to Jewish parents who survived the Holocaust , he grew up in Israel , Sweden , Canada , England , Argentina and Germany. Kleiner made his stage debut in 1967 at the Yiddish Theater in Israel, where he worked until 1969.

Kleiner became known to a wider audience in the early 1980s with the lead role in Helmut Dietl's TV series Der absolut normal Wahnsinn . This series gave him his breakthrough as an actor. During this time, he was referred to by the media as "Bavarian Woody Allen ". Prior to that, he played the role of Achmed in Dietl's series Munich Stories (1974). In addition, Kleiner was seen in the series Der Sonne gegen (1984–1985) and When the Neighbors knew (1990–1991). In his roles, Kleiner embodied hectic, chaotic characters in a lovable way. The actor also became known as an advertising figure for the Bahlsen company . He campaigned back in the early 1970s for Campari in Austria with the dictum "Where is the Campari?" In 1994 he played in the Pumuckl film version Pumuckl and the blue Klabauter and in the third season of Pumuckl television series Pumuckls adventure the ship's cook Odessi.

In the last years of his life, Kleiner withdrew and spent a lot of time in Israel, where he gave acting lessons. He died of a heart attack on January 9, 2012 at the age of 63 . He was buried in the New Israelite Cemetery at the North Cemetery in Munich.
