Munich Stories (also Munich Gschichten ) is the title of a nine-episode early evening television series by Bayerischer Rundfunk from 1974, directed by Helmut Dietl and Herbert Vesely . The authors were Helmut Dietl, Anita Niemeyer , Franz Geiger and Bernd Schroeder .

The series shows various, loosely connected episodes from the lives of some people around the central figure of the roughly thirty-year-old Karl "Tscharlie" Häusler, who still lives with his grandmother.

The milieu

The episodes are set in a petty-bourgeois Munich milieu doomed to extinction due to the renovation of the old town and gentrification . The modern age, hand in hand with the chiceria , is spreading in the old Lehel district and is gradually displacing the old Bavarian Munich. Grandma Anna reacts to the creeping changes with a mixture of laconic humor and healthy distrust that has been acquired over a long life. The grandson Karl, known as Tscharlie , who lives with her , is a life artist and suburban trizzi , always tries to adapt to the changed conditions, mostly with little success, but never discouraged. As a self-employed businessman, he wants to convert various quick ideas into financial success, always looking for the "big thing". However, his freedom is always extremely important to him.

As fallen out of time playing the violin works lodger Leopold Heinrich, an old musician before the ruins of a shattered career. Confident and yet touching in her naivety, Susi walks through life and to bed with her fiancé Tscharlie, but despairs of his fears of commitment. Her parents, who have been working hard in the Sankt Anna Eck inn for decades , would much rather see her in a relationship with a solid, good man. Her father Erwin in particular sees Tscharlie as a “work-shy Stenz ”.

Charlie's friend Gustl is employed by an insurance company and lives in a regular way, nevertheless, or perhaps precisely because of that, he admires his charlie and remains loyal to his side in almost all of his activities, like Sancho Panza . Achmed, who drives a taxi for Erwin to supplement the meager income from the Hillermeier bar, dreams of a career as a singer.

The melancholy-grotesque Munich stories convince with a lot of love for the characters and attention to detail in the drawing of an old Munich flair, but especially with the comical dialogues. Crude swear words in dialect testify to the milieu. Despite the Bavarian reference and sometimes strong dialect, the series was also successful outside of Bavaria and enjoys cult status with many fans . Sayings like “Ois Chicago!”, “Logical!” And “Anyway!” Entered the linguistic usage thanks to the series.

background

In the episodes Das Brettl and Ein Ziel im Leben you could see Helmut Dietl in cameo appearances as a taxi guest and bar visitor. Dietl commented on the series: “The Munich stories are not historical memories. They are scenes from today that were invented, but could be true. ”The house of the Häuslers was at Tattenbachstrasse 3 .

The series was first broadcast in the regional programs ( evening programs ) of the ARD . DVDs and Blu-Rays with all episodes are available.
