characters

Pumuckl

The title hero "Pumuckl" - actually a diminutive of Nepomuk - is a red-haired goblin who has lived with the master carpenter Franz Eder since he stuck to his glue pot. This made the little descendant of the Klabauter men visible to the carpenter and is obliged by a goblin law to stay with him from now on. He is invisible to everyone with the exception of Master Eder. For animals, however, it is visible.

Pumuckl loves crackling paper, glittering objects, chocolate, pudding, sailing boats and mess, has a strong aversion to cats, brownies, garden gnomes and cheese ("rotten milk"), but likes small animals such as guinea pigs and mice. His passions are painting and poetry. He prefers to sleep in a pile of sawdust in Mr. Eder's carpenter's workshop, but Mr. Eder even made his own bed for him.

Master Eder

Franz Eder is the owner of a small carpenter's workshop in a Munich backyard, and his apartment is above the workshop. He's a bachelor , in his early sixties, humorous and amiable. Master Eder often has to bother with the little goblin, but all in all he is happy that he is no longer alone and is happy to take on the task of "educating" Pumuckl. His regulars' table friends often make fun of him because of his goblin.

Mrs. Eichinger

Ms. Eichinger, Mr. Eder's cleaning lady, is very superstitious and, above all, strictly believes in horoscopes . She always tries to bring Mr. Eder closer to her worldview, even if he is not convinced of it. In a few episodes she is called Ms. Rettinger. Master Eder often refers to her as a groom .

Mr. Bernbacher

Bernbacher Schorsch is a locksmith and one of Eder's regulars . He often talks mockingly about Eder's spinning about Pumuckl (whose name he often cannot remember and instead calls it Schmutzbuckl, Brumbuckl, Pudackl etc.), but now and then believes in its existence. Pumuckl flees to him in “The Big Trouble”.

Mrs. Bernbacher

Mr. Bernbacher's wife, who often argues with her husband and wears a wig.

Mr. Schmitt

Toni Schmitt is also one of Eder's regulars who runs a small car repair shop.

Mr. Wimmer

The "old Mr. Wimmer" is a person who never appears, but who can be heard over and over again on the phone or in conversations. Wimmer runs an antique shop, for which he has goods repaired and restored by master Eder.

Mr. Schwertfeger

Mr. Schwertfeger appears in the film adaptation and in some episodes. He is an older friend of Eder, who always wears glasses on his forehead and a second on his nose. He often goes for walks with his dog and has an allotment garden with his wife, known as "Schnucki". His favorite saying is "If i sucked wos, then you suck it again, suck liaba nothing, oiso suck i same liaba nothing."

Mr. and Mrs. Stürtzlinger

You are the caretaker couple of the house in which Mr. Eder lives and works. Like most other tenants, you live in the front building. This fact (including the fact that Eder lives in the rear building) is a small swipe at an old Munich worldview, namely that the "people behind the scenes" are a little crazy. Mr. Stürtzlinger usually sings when he works, preferably a modified form of the King Ludwig song ("Freedom lives on the mountains ..")

Although most sources on the Internet use the spelling "Stürzlinger", you can see the spelling "Stürtzlinger" on his doorbell in the series.

Mrs. Hartl

She is the moody and curious neighbor of Eders, always there when there is news in the neighborhood, but also always annoyed by the softest music. She expresses her anger by shouting “I ziag out of the house!” From the window. She is at war with Mrs. Eichinger.

The old man in business

A running gag is an old man in the economy who always fell asleep and was woken up again and again by the waitress with the words "Grandpa, wake up, the soup is going to die", whereupon he nudges his neighbor and says "Des is mei Platz hia “can slide to the side. He even performs this monologue in an episode in which the economy is almost empty and no one sits by his side.

history

1962: radio plays

The figure of Pumuckl was invented by Ellis Kaut in 1961 for a radio play series on Bayerischer Rundfunk . According to the author, the name “Pumuckl” came about during a ski trip. During a walk through the winter landscape, she shook the snow off the branches of her husband on his neck. He then said: "You are a real Pumuckl!"

The first episode “Spuk in der Werkstatt” was broadcast on February 21, 1962, the last episode “Pumuckl goes back to the sea” on December 30, 1973. The radio plays end with Pumuckl getting to know another Klabauter and happily returning with him to the realm of the Klabauter and Meister Eder recognizes that Klabauters are like children who eventually grow up and go their own way. This end led to massive complaints from children and parents who were of the opinion that Pumuckl and Meister Eder should not be separated. The episode was then not broadcast again.

The typical Pumuckl voice came from Hans Clarin even then , even before book, film and TV versions. Master Eder was initially spoken by Franz Fröhlich , after whose death Alfred Pongratz took over the role. A total of 90 episodes were created: 31 episodes between 1962 and 1964 with Franz Fröhlich as Meister Eder and 59 more from 1965 to 1973 with Alfred Pongratz. In addition, 15 stories that already existed with Franz Fröhlich as Meister Eder were re-recorded between 1969 and 1973 with Alfred Pongratz. The radio plays were directed by Jan Alverdes until 1971 and after his death the last 9 episodes were taken over by Willy Purucker . While all radio plays with Alfred Pongratz as Meister Eder are still available in the sound archive of Bayerischer Rundfunk, only "Pumuckl and the dirt" and "Pumuckl and the rubber duck " as well as a listener recorded "Spuk in der Werkstatt" exist of the episodes with Franz Fröhlich ".

Parallel to the radio drama series, a total of 78 stories were re-recorded for publication on phonograms from 1969 to 1978, the first 18 again under the direction of Jan Alverdes, from episode 19 with Alexander Malachovsky as director. Until his death in 1977, Alfred Pongratz spoke Master Eder in 66 episodes. Gustl Bayrhammer took on this role in the last 12 episodes .

The Rhenish radio play version Always this Fizzibitz was produced in 1963 by the WDR . Karl Raaf was the spokesman for Meister Eder, and Hans Georg Gregor was that of Fizzibitz.

There are also radio plays in Switzerland . In it Jörg Schneider lent his voice to Pumuckl and Master Eder was spoken by Paul Bühlmann . In these radio plays, everyone speaks Swiss German .

1965: books

Between 1965 and 1978, ten volumes with 60 stories were initially published by Herold-Verlag in Stuttgart . It was not until 1991 that an eleventh volume followed with six more stories. This means that a total of 66 stories have been published in book form.

For these books, Barbara von Johnson created the illustrations and thus the appearance of Pumuckl. Since the first television productions, Pumuckl has been drawn by Ellis Kaut's son-in-law Brian Bagnall , who drew the goblin with red hair and, at the request of Manfred Korytowski , the producer who fled the National Socialists to Brazil as a child with his Jewish family green trousers and a yellow shirt ( Brazilian national colors ).

1969: records

On the basis of the radio plays, 33 records with two episodes each were made from 1969 . The Pumuckl is spoken here by Hans Clarin and the Meister Eder by Alfred Pongratz. In contrast to the radio plays, more High German is spoken here, and there are also deviations in the details and in the speakers of the supporting roles. As in the radio version, prominent Bavarian folk actors such as Erni Singerl , Karl Obermayr , Karl Tischlinger , Katharina de Bruyn and Alexander Malachovsky often appeared in guest roles.

After Alfred Pongratz's death, six more long-playing records, each with two episodes, were produced in which Gustl Bayrhammer , who had spoken as a regular at the table in earlier episodes, speaks to Meister Eder (for reasons unknown, August Riehl was the narrator in these twelve episodes Harald Leipnitz replaced). After the success of the cinema and the first TV season, the radio play cassettes / records were completely reissued (the episodes with Alfred Pongratz were now also spoken with Gustl Bayrhammer, while in the last episodes of the old series, in which Bayrhammer beats Meister Eder and Leipnitz had spoken the narrator, had been spoken to again with Riehl as narrator). Most of the dialogues from the record series were taken over here, the dialogues of the children such as Florian Halm and Julia Fischer , who was already grown up at the time of the new series, were not re-recorded, for example, nor was the dialog from Lina Carstens as Mrs. The first snow that died in 1978. In some cases, however, new speakers were also used. For example, Bayrhammer had already spoken to the locksmith Schmitt in the episodes with Pongratz; In the new episodes Schmitt was spoken by Fritz Strasser in the episodes in which Bayrhammer spoke to him . Another new speaker was Ilse Neubauer as Mrs. Eichinger, who had played the caretaker in the first season of the TV show. In addition, the new radio plays also contain the title song of the television program. A total of 86 episodes were created with Gustl Bayrhammer as Meister Eder.

In contrast to the radio play, Pumuckl does not go back to the sea, but in the episode now called “Pumuckl and the Blue Klabauter”, in the end it stays with Meister Eder.

1982: Feature film "Meister Eder and his Pumuckl"

Between 1979 and 1982, the first Pumuckl movie was made under the title “Meister Eder und seine Pumuckl”. Gustl Bayrhammer , who has spoken master Eder in radio plays since 1977, also took on this role for the film adaptations. As in all the films and series that followed, Pumuckl can be seen as a cartoon character copied into a real environment. These trick pieces were made at Pannonia-Film in Budapest .

The film is essentially a compilation of four episodes of the television series produced in parallel: "Spuk in der Werkstatt", "The bed sold", "The castle ghost" and "The suckling pig meal". However, several scenes were recorded twice (with other actors in supporting roles).

As a teaser for the upcoming movie, the commercial breaks were interrupted in the first by short Pumuckl sketches shot exclusively for this purpose .

1982–1989: TV series "Meister Eder und seine Pumuckl"

From 1982 to 1989 the series Meister Eder und seine Pumuckl was created with Gustl Bayrhammer as Meister Eder; Hans Clarin lent his voice to the goblin Pumuckl. The series consists of 52 episodes in two seasons. Directed by Ulrich König .

1994: Feature film "Pumuckl and the blue Klabauter"

In 1993 Eder actor Gustl Bayrhammer died . Before that he had played this role one last time in the 1994 film “ Pumuckl and the Blue Klabauter ”, in which Eder only appeared briefly. Due to his death before the completion of the film, Bayrhammer had to be dubbed by Wolf Euba afterwards , as the sound quality was too poor. In the film also seemed Heinz Eckner , Towje Kleiner and Wolfgang Volz with (the cruise ship as the voice of the blue Klabauters and helmsman). The directors were Alfred Deutsch and Horst Schier, because Ulrich König did not like the script.

1995–2007: TV show "Pumuckl TV"

In 1995 the television program Pumuckl TV started on ARD , in which old Pumuckl episodes and other series were shown. The framework story was moderated by Eva Habermann and Denise Zich , among others . Hans Clarin (the voice of Pumuckl) played the villain Silvio Kirsch in this series. Benedikt Weber played the "outside reporter Beni" from 1995 to 2003, and from 2003 the evil magician Magerix.

1999: TV series "Pumuckl's Adventure"

In 1999 they tried another 13 episodes for KiKA under the title " Pumuckls Adventure ". She picked up the protagonists of the last movie, but did not reach the popularity of the first two seasons by far .

2000: Musical "Meister Eder und seine Pumuckl"

On October 21, 2000, the premiere of the Pumuckl musical "Meister Eder und seine Pumuckl" took place in Munich. A tour with a total of over 250,000 spectators followed.

2003: Feature film "Pumuckl and his circus adventure"

From 1999 to 2003 the movie " Pumuckl and his circus adventure " was made. This time, too, no new appointment was made for Master Eder: After Pumuckl returned from the cruise from “Pumuckl's Adventure”, he found that the master carpenter had died in the meantime. In return, Pumuckl meets his relative, the master restorer Ferdinand Eder, played by Pumuckl's former spokesman Hans Clarin . Kai Taschner's previous role was taken over in the film because for health reasons, after more than 40 years, Clarin was no longer able to speak the heavily vocal cord stressing (about two octaves higher and slightly croaking) Pumuckl voice. It is also noticeable in the film that Pumuckl only becomes invisible at the last second and not - as in the past - almost a minute before. Other actors in the film include Christine Neubauer , Sunnyi Melles , Nikolaus Paryla , Erni Singerl , Patrick Lindner and Karl-Heinz Wildmoser .

2008: Pumuckl audio books

Since 2008 the classic Pumuckl stories have been published as audio books, read by Stefan Kaminski . In the title "Pumuckl - Summer Stories", a new story ("The Holiday Dog") was set to music for the first time by author Uli Leistenschneider.

2018: Musical "Pumuckl"

On April 19, 2018, the premiere of the musical Pumuckl by Franz Wittenbrink and Anne X. Weber based on Ellis Kaut took place in Munich's Gärtnerplatz-Theater . The premier cast included Benjamin Oeser as Pumuckl and Ferdinand Dörfler as Meister Eder.

Litigation

The cartoon character was and is the subject of various legal proceedings. Although Ellis Kaut invented the Pumuckl stories, its appearance comes from the illustrator Barbara von Johnson , who designed the Pumuckl in a competition in 1963 and later drew it on behalf of Ellis Kaut. With the production of the first film, her Pumuckl figure was replaced by one designed by Pannonia-Film in Budapest. The Munich Higher Regional Court ruled in July 2003 that Barbara von Johnson was also entitled to copyright on the figure of Pumuckl in its current appearance. In 2006, Barbara von Johnson was awarded retroactive compensation for the Pumuckl's drawn appearances. As a result of the decision, she will now be mentioned by name in the opening credits of the series.

In another legal dispute, whether Barbara von Johnson is allowed to support a painting competition in which children should draw a friend for Pumuckl, or whether this does not violate Ellis Kaut's moral rights to the literary figure Pumuckl, the Munich Regional Court ruled in favor of Barbara von Johnson . Further legal disputes between the two Pumuckl mothers were pending before the Munich Regional Court. The disagreements were resolved in 2012 to such an extent that the public was informed of the reconciliation of the Pumuckl mothers.

According to the universal label Karussell, the fact that the episodes of the second TV series have not yet appeared on DVD is due to the fact that “the legal situation regarding these episodes is unclear”.

Shortly before the publication date of the 50th anniversary edition of the first Pumuckl book on September 11, 2015, another dispute threatened to break out. The character of the protagonist should appear in the new edition in a different form - without his characteristic little belly. There was a protest on Twitter with the hashtag “# bringbackbäuchlein”. At pressure from the fans, there was only one edition with a thin Pumuckl. Later publications are based again on the traditional template.
