Barbara from Johnson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barbara von Johnson (* 1942 in Munich ) is a German illustrator and artist and is considered the first designer of the visual appearance of the fairy tale character Pumuckl , a goblin , which she designed in a competition based on a story by Ellis Kaut .

Life

The artist, mother of three sons, lives and works in Munich and Greece .

From 1962 to 1966 she trained as a commercial artist , but also regularly attended the summer academy in Salzburg , where, among other things, she took watercolor courses with Oskar Kokoschka . At the age of 21 she won the competition for the visualization of Pumuckl advertised by Ellis Kaut at the Academy for the Graphic Arts in Munich.

By 1978 she illustrated ten Pumuckl books and 33 record sleeves. In addition, during her time as a children's and school book illustrator, she drew around 20 children's books, 28 school books, five games, 24 workbooks and many illustrations for children's magazines. From 1983 Barbara von Johnson worked primarily as a freelance artist. She completed training in art therapy and numerous advanced training courses and study trips.

Since 1990 she has been creating paintings, objets d'art and photographic works, repeatedly dissolving the boundaries between these art forms in her works. Some works are characterized by the fact that the transition zone between graphics and painting is explored. Here, pictorial surface compositions are often overlaid or structured by elements of the caricature , which are reminiscent of the early graphic work of Johnsons.

Pumuckl

Barbara von Johnson illustrated Ellis Kauts Pumuckl stories from 1963 to 1978 and also designed colored illustrations for corresponding record sleeves . According to her own statements, Barbara von Johnson has had no influence on the graphic design of the Pumuckl since 1992. A few years after the first Pumuckl film (produced 1979–1982), the goblin was drawn by Ellis Kaut's son-in-law Brian Bagnall for merchandising purposes .

Litigation

Barbara von Johnson describes herself as the optical mother of the Pumuckl . As such, it had been forgotten. In 2003 she was legally entitled to be named as the author of the graphic template for every visual representation of Pumuckl. Even with the production of the first Pumuckl feature film, with Pumuckl-TV and with the use of the figure on the Internet, contrary to copyright law, her consent was apparently not obtained, so that in 2006 she was able to claim additional compensation, partly out of court and partly through legal action. In 2007 she was sued by Ellis Kaut in return for looking for "a friend for Pumuckl" in a local children's painting competition, which Ellis Kaut saw as a copyright infringement. However, the courts ruled in Barbara von Johnson's favor. On October 4, 2013, Ellis Kaut and Barbara von Johnson reconciled.

criticism

The displeasure of Pumuckl fans aroused the fact that Barbara von Johnson's lawyer, in an effort to protect the copyright of his client, warned the operators of several Pumuckl fan sites, which showed Pumuckl illustrations without the legally required information of the author.
