occupation

Gori vatra - fire! ( Gori vatra ) is a tragic comedy published in 2003 by the Bosnian director Pjer Žalica .

action

The small Bosnian town of Tešanj is thrown into turmoil three years after the Dayton Treaty (1998) by the announced visit of US President Bill Clinton .

The residents hope that his visit will improve the quality of life and increase prosperity in the war-hit town. That's why they do everything they can to show themselves and Tešanj at their best by trying to cover up the darker sides of the city. Years of corruption, crime and ethnic conflicts must be overcome within a week.

The Bosnians, paradoxically, decorate the US flag with red instead of white stars. This re-establishes the reference to the old communist rule in the SFRY .

Pjer Žalica used the play The Auditor of Gogol as a model .

criticism

  • Gori Vatra is a "moderately eccentric feature film". “The plot is determined by a consistently bitter-sweet tone: sometimes you let yourself be filled with vodka, sometimes you step on a mine, thousands of which are lying around all over Bosnia. […] The design is not exactly characterized by particular sensitivity, but the script owes two or three ideas to her (especially the dead who return without a fuss and want to talk to the living). That gives the story its hold. [...] He fits in well with the guard of young filmmakers who are making a name for themselves in Europe. "
