The Sarajevo Film Festival is the most important and largest film festival in Southeast Europe and one of the largest film festivals in Europe. It was created in 1995 during the siege of Sarajevo in the Bosnian War as a protest against war and every year in August it brings international and regional celebrities to Sarajevo to screen a wide range of feature films and short films . The festival is run by Mirsad Purivatra, formerly executive director of the Bosnian branch of McCann Erickson. The first festival with 37 films from 15 countries already attracted 15,000 viewers. The festival is dedicated to the art form of film and supports independent film .

"Heart of Sarajevo"

The Sarajevo Film Festival has been accredited as an international competition festival with a regional focus by the international film producers association FIAPF since 1996 . Since 2003, only films from Southeast Europe have been shown in the international competition. The main prize of the festival is the “Heart of Sarajevo” (Srce Sarajeva) for the best film.

The Sarajevo Film Festival awards further awards such as an honorable mention from the jury, an audience award, a short film award and an award for Panorama, which was given by Mike Leigh's Topsy-Turvy in 2000 .
