Mustang is a multi-award-winning film drama by the Turkish director Deniz Gamze Ergüven from 2015 , which was made in a Turkish-French-German co-production. From the perspective of the youngest sister, the film depicts the life of five young sisters who grow up with their grandmother in a remote Turkish village. They do not always succeed in defending their joie de vivre through tricky maneuvers and their freedom by running away from the restrictions of a repressive, patriarchal society.
The film premiered on May 19 at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and opened in German cinemas on February 25, 2016.
action
On the last day of school before the summer holidays, the five sisters Sonay, Selma, Ece, Nur and Lale say goodbye to their teacher Dilek, who is moving to a school in distant Istanbul , and then walk home on the beach. They romp around in the sea with some boys from school and have a water fight. When they arrive home, their grandmother is expecting them and accuses them of having "rubbed" against the boys.
In the evening Uncle Erol comes home and accuses the grandmother of bringing up the girls too laxly. He forces the three eldest to be examined in the hospital to find that they are still "untouched".
Now Erol is gradually transforming her house into a prison: the garden wall is raised, the doors are locked and the windows are barred. Instead of having fun with the Internet and the telephone, the girls are now being instructed by the women in the village to cook and run the household.
Lale, the youngest and wildest, is now thinking of fleeing to Istanbul and keeps slipping outside for a short while. She takes Erol's car keys, but after starting the engine she doesn't know how to drive. On one of her little escapes, she persuades the young truck driver Yasin to teach her how to drive a car.
Despite everything, the others always manage to break out secretly. So all five steal from the house and take the bus to a football match in Trabzon . The game will be televised and the women in the village are horrified to see the five girls among the spectators in the stadium. A shrewd aunt paralyzes the village's electricity supply to prevent the men from finding out.
The excursion still has serious consequences for the sisters: They are no longer allowed to dress as they want, but the women tailor them brown sack-like dresses and they initiate marriages for the girls. The eldest, Sonay, can get her to marry her friend Ekin, but Selma, the second eldest, has to marry a man she doesn't know. Ece is also supposed to be married in this way.
Lale now notices that Ece is acting strangely and that Uncle Erol sneaks up to the older sisters at night. After an incident during dinner, he sends Ece to her room. There she shoots herself.
Now Nur, the fourth oldest, is to be married too. But when the wedding party is greeted in front of the house by uncle and grandma, the two remaining sisters barricade themselves in the well-secured house. They sneak outside on the back and flee first in Uncle Erol's car, then with Yasin's help on to Istanbul. There they seek refuge with their former teacher Dilek.
background
The opening scene of the film is based on Ergüven's personal experience.
Sexual violence is never explicitly shown in the entire film, but in the last third two short shots suggest the possibility that the uncle may abuse the girls at night. This is compounded by Nur's threat towards the end of the film to report his uncle as he tries to get to the two sisters barricaded in the house.
- title
In an interview for the weekly newspaper Der Freitag , the director explained the film's title: “The Mustang is a wild horse - the perfect symbol for my five heroines and their rampant, boisterous temperament. There are also visually parallels. Their hair is like horse mane and when they chase through the village it looks like a herd in an uproar. The story always progresses, as if at a gallop. It is this energy that defines the film for me, and the Mustang image is perfect for that. "
synchronization
The German dubbing was based on a dialogue book and the dialogue direction by Stephan Hoffmann .
