Deniz Gamze Ergüven (born June 4, 1978 in Ankara ) is a Turkish and French director and screenwriter . Her first feature film Mustang was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best foreign language film in 2016 .

Life

Deniz Gamze Ergüven is the daughter of a Turkish diplomat who moved to Paris in the early 1980s , where he worked for UNESCO and the OECD . She grew up alternately in Ankara, the United States and Paris, where she also attended school. She studied African history in Johannesburg , followed by film studies at La fémis in 2002 . She graduated in 2006 with a degree in film directing. During the filming of Mustang was born her son on February 11, 2015. Her greatest success to date is this film, shown for the first time at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival in the “Quinzaine des Réalisateurs” series. There he won the Europa Cinemas Label Award and also in 2015 the LUX , the film prize of the European Parliament . The film was nominated as a French contribution for an Oscar for best foreign language film . He was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award . In 2016 Ergüven received the Peace Prize of German Films - Die Brücke (young talent award ) for Mustang
