LUX (film award)
LUX is the Film Award of the European Parliament , which since 2007 is awarded. It "should stimulate discussion and reflection on and artistic engagement with European unification". The LUX is awarded to films that address the topic of integration and reflect the wealth of linguistic diversity in Europe.
General
The creation of the award goes back to Gérard Onesta's efforts, among other things . “Lux” is the Latin word for “light” and is intended as an allusion to the Lumière brothers . The trophy represents a film roll in the form of a tower, which is supposed to symbolize the tower of Babel . In the first year, 800 entries applied for the award. In 2011, the EU's prize money was 90,000 euros.
purpose
As part of this award, Parliament will cover the costs of subtitling the three films in the final round on the occasion of the “LUX Film Days” in all 24 official EU languages. It also funds the adaptation of the original version of the award winner to the needs of the hearing impaired or visually impaired, as well as a customized promotion of the film so that it can be shown in each of the 28 EU countries. The prize is intended to help reduce the fragmentation of European film.
Electoral process
An expert jury first makes a pre-selection of ten films ("Official Selection"), which is later limited to three films ("Competition"), from which the parliamentarians choose the winner.
