Amanda Kernell (born September 9, 1986 in Umeå ) is a Swedish - Sami film director.

Life

Kernell's mother is Swedish and her father is Same . From 2009 to 2013 she attended the film school Den Danske Filmskole in Copenhagen and graduated with a degree in directing.

Her short film Stoerre Vaerie won several awards in 2015, including the audience award for the best Swedish short film at the Gothenburg International Film Festival and the award for best Swedish short film at the Uppsala International Short Film Festival , and was nominated for the Guldbagge . Stoerre Vaerrie formed the basis for her first feature- length film Sameblod , which was released in 2016. Based on research in her own Sami family, among other things, the film tells of the assimilation and racism of the Sami in Sweden. The International Film Festival of Venice 2016 Kernell was awarded for the best directorial debut. The success of Sameblod gave Kernell the opportunity to make another feature film, which she began working on after Sameblod was released .

Kernell lives in Copenhagen and teaches directing.
