Uppsala International Short Film Festival
The Uppsala International Short Film Festival ( Swedish : Uppsala Internationella Kortfilmfestival ) is an international film festival for short films founded in 1982 , which takes place annually in October in the Swedish city of Uppsala .
history
The Uppsala International Short Film Festival, one of Sweden's oldest film festivals, was started by a group led by Lars Hedenstedt. The first edition of the festival opened on September 1, 1982 with a screening of the Lumière brothers' film The Arrival of a Train at the Station in La Ciotat . Around 60 short films, mainly from Sweden and Denmark, were shown in front of around 1,000 viewers. At the next festival edition in 1983, short films from the People's Republic of China and Czechoslovakia were included in the program for the first time . From then on, Uppsala made a name for itself by presenting films from beyond the Iron Curtain that are otherwise hard to see in the West . In 1984 the festival first took place in October. A children's film festival has been part of the program since 1985 and feature films were shown until 1992 . The 1993 festival ended in financial disaster, which is why only 50 films were shown in 1994. While the number of films shown increased steadily, the festival also gained increasing international recognition. In 1997 the Uppsala International Short Film Festival was recognized as the only film festival in the Nordic countries by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . We have worked closely with the Swedish Film Institute since 2000 . Short films from Sweden shown at the festival will be selected for the Guldbagge national film award , which is awarded by the Film Institute. In 2004 a special program of the Lesbian and Gay Film Days Hamburg was shown in Uppsala .
