Gérard Onesta ( Toulouse , 2008)

Gérard Onesta (born August 5, 1960 in Albi ) is a French politician and was Deputy President of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2009 .

Career

Gérard Onesta graduated with a degree in architecture in 1984 and then worked as the head of an architecture firm until he was appointed Vice President in 1999. At the age of 27 he joined the French Green Party and was a member of the National Council of the Greens ( Les Verts ) from 1987 to 1999. Soon afterwards, he was responsible for internal party organization in the Greens. At first only for the Midi-Pyrénées region (from 1991 to 1992) and then also at the national level (from 1994 to 1995), Gérard Onesta was the Verts' press spokesman . In addition, Onesta was co-founder of the Association of European Ecological Youth in 1988.

His cousin Claude Onesta (* 1957) is the coach of the French men's national handball team .

In the EU Parliament, Gérard Onesta has numerous functions:

  • Member of the Group of the Greens (Les Verts) and their European super-organization (Alliance Libre Européenne)
  • Deputy President of the European Parliament
  • Deputy Head of the European Parliament Office
  • Member of the Constitutional Commission
  • Deputy member of the Commission for Culture, Youth, Education, Media and Sport
  • Deputy Member of the Commission on the European Economic Area
  • Member of the delegation in charge of relations with Australia and New Zealand
