Philippe Lioret (born October 10, 1955 in Paris ) is a French screenwriter and director .

Life

Philippe Lioret initially worked as a sound engineer and made his first feature film Tombés du Ciel in 1993 with Jean Rochefort and Marisa Paredes . For this he received the award for “Best Director” at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia-San Sebastián .

He then shot commercials and in 1997 completed work on his second film Tenue correcte exigée . This was followed by Mademoiselle in 2000 and The Lighthouse Keeper's Wife ( L'équipier ) in 2004, each with Sandrine Bonnaire in the lead role. For his film Don't worry, I'm fine ( Je vais bien, ne t'en fais pas , 2006) Lioret received an Étoile d'Or as “best screenwriter” and leading actress Mélanie Laurent received César as “best young actress”.

In 2009, Lioret's sixth feature film Welcome , set in the immigrant community of Calais , was released. The drama celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale 2009 and was awarded the Lux Film Prize of the European Parliament, the Prix Lumières and the Osnabrück Peace Film Prize , among others . In France, the film aroused not only understanding and sympathy for illegalized immigrants, but also criticism because it undifferentiated equated their attempts to flee the English Channel with the life-threatening situation of the Jews in 1943, i.e. the Holocaust . Lioret certainly saw parallels, but had no intention of making a political film; he was attracted by the dramaturgical potential of the subject.

On the following two films, Toutes nos envies (2011) and Le fils de Jean (2016), Lioret was involved not only as a screenwriter and director, but also as a producer. The latter was shown in Germany at the 33rd French Film Festival 2016 in Tübingen in the original French version with English subtitles (as The Kid ).

In 2014 Lioret received the “ Officier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres ” award from the French Ministry of Culture .
